Brain Teasers
Kebab Mate
Mad Ade regularly plays chess with his best friend, Dim Dave McLoweyecue. They play just one game per day and the loser must give the winner a kebab. After a period of time Mad Ade had bought Dim Dave 5 kebabs whereas Dim Dave had bought Mad Ade 21 kebabs. So how many games were played in total if there were no tied matches?
Answer
Dim Dave McLoweyecue received 5 kebabs and won 5 games. Mad Ade received 21 kebabs and won 21 games. Thus, the total number of games that they played was 26.

Originally this teaser was supposed to have a prize of $1 to the winner (see the teaser entitled "Jay and Mary"). Using kebabs, however, you lose the point that a winner on one day could give his kebab to the other person if he won the next day. If you ARE assuming that a winner could give his kebab away on a later day, then Mad Ade would only need to buy Dave five kebabs if Dave won the FIRST five games. If Mad Ade won the first five games, he would never have to buy a kebab. Also, if Dave won only the last five games, then he would have had to buy 26 kebabs, not 21 because he wouldn't have had 5 kebabs to give back to Mad Ade until it was too late. This teaser really only works with money, and the assumption that each of the players has plenty of money to give away at the start.
i agree, this forces you to make too many assumptions to arrive at the stated solution. the way it is currently worded, the total number of games would be 26. there is no mention of an exchange of kebabs, only that the loser buys the winner a kebab. also, it is more reasonable to assume that the winner eats and enjoys the kebab, rather than saving it for exchange on subsequent days.
absolutely to many assumptions'if they played 31 games and did a trade off, dave would in effect have no kebabs, by the way, South Africans make the best kebabs
Firstly I agree that the answer should be 26 unless we are told of a trade off possibility. Secondly I do not believe that Mad Ade would trade off a kebab instead of eating it. Thirdly, what size is MAD ADE after eating all those kebabs, or are we going to see a string of adverts like the USA's subway ones? Finally, South Arfica DO NOT make the best kebabs, England does!
Five Kebab's too many.
confusing???
I corrected the answer to 26, which everyone above agrees with.
