ooooh i really like that one!
Add an O to CAME, it becomes CAMEO
Clever. I couldn't come up with the answer. Thanks for posting.
Nice, nice, nice.
Never thought of that.
'Cameo' is also a good answer.
I wonder if there are other words.

I thought this was one of those "trick" questions - so I was thinking "box" is a one syllable word and when you add a "letter" to it (as in a postal letter) it becomes a "mailbox" 3 syllables. But very good teaser -thanks for posting
I was thinking this was a trick like rwhitmer. Having not looked at the hint, I came up with "news".
News + Letter (1 "letter") = Newsletter!
In other news (ha!), the word "letter" no longer looks like a word.

this was a good one! i'm too tired to think about it though.
Like hunting a needle in a haystack.I couldn't even find the haystack.
how many possible answers are there to this..i got hell, ad an "o" becomes hello
I can't believe I got this! Knew it had to have a lot of vowels so started with are and area popped up!
Are--area and came--cameo are both great answers!!
Will someone explain how mailbox and hello are 3-syllable words????

Have to agree with wordmama! please explain!
Too hard for me, but I had fun trying to come up with an answer. Area and cameo are both great answers. Thanks for a great teaser.
ore + o = oreo
yummy!
yummy!
Awesome!
There are other words to that this teaser could apply to. Anyway, great teaser.
Yeh, like Rome, Romeo. Mime, mimeo. Jude, Judea. Rode, rodeo. Jug, juggler. No, umm, wait...
Good teaser. I'll look for more words too!
are-area
rode-rodeo
came-cameo
ide-idea
Still like it a lot, though

though it has obviously been demonstrated that there are a lot of possible answers to this, it was a nice try. I came up with several of the alternative solutions but not the one give. Really liked the people who thought outside the box and came up with "trick" answers too.
AROB and that's a lot of syllables. A to GiMi & SiCt.
I was focused on the '3', so I got tripe and triple. Okay, so the l isn't on the exact end, but it was close.
At least I finally figured out what AROB means. Thanks doehead, your acronym kept me thinking much longer than some of these riddles.

Good teaser. Loved that there were so many bright commenters who had numerous OTHER answers. I fumbled with finding a letter at the "END" of the word. Now I realize that the end can also be the beginning! Warm thoughts and thank yous to Sis and KiPA!
teri, I'm jealous! You've figured out AROB. I've asked several times, so I surmise the answer is something that can't be printed on a family site. I wouldn't terribly care, except d keeps using it, so that makes it annoying not to know!
Wordmama, AROB is not too raunchy to be printed on a family site, it is just shorthand for ........ you can figure it out. Hi to G and d.
Teaser was tough, but in my old age I have come to realize that I'm a moron.

Another preview on braingle ... go figure
I was not going to go through all the three letter words there are to hunt for it so did not even try. Seeing how many there are after people looked I am glad I did not take the time.
Didn't look at the hint, so I first thought of rode/rodeo.
There's also:
Rome/Romeo
Jude/Judea
And with 3 letters to start:
aid/Aida

I LOVED this puzzle. There were so many clever answers, too. I really enjoyed the comments. My favorite was the word aid, which when adding an "a" became Aida. This was different because in all the other cases, the added vowel was next to an existing vowel. In aid/Aida, the change occurred in the original word. Thanks for posting!
Oh, that made my head hurt.
Now my head is really hurting...what does AROB mean? Please someone show me some mercy.
AROB means another repeat on Braingle.
That said, I must admit I didn't get it again !

RE: How is mailbox a 3 syllable word.
Could be that in some locales it is pronounced as...
MAY UHL BOX
Could be that in some locales it is pronounced as...
MAY UHL BOX
Also, without considering the hint: stere/stereo, crime/Crimea, and borne/Borneo.
Mailbox is transgender, the third syllable is implied.
I loved how this puzzle received so many varied comments. Thanks for posting!
I did not figure that out. Good teaser!
Yes, but can you remove a letter from a 2-syllable word and make it 3 syllables?
Fun, challenging and entertaining teaser. I came up with the correct answer fairly quickly though this was a tough type of teaser to solve.
Rove, I couldn't find what word you're looking for, but I did find another example of what the teaser was looking for:
Gave + A = Agave.
I found a separate list that list about a dozen words with this property. The 6 others I found that don't involve proper nouns or abbreviations at all are area, cameo, alien, rodeo, simile, and agape.
