Brain Teasers
Piggy Bank
You have stealthily raided your small child's piggy bank. You feel guilty as you count the money. You have the same number of dimes and quarters, totaling exactly $2.45. When you turn honest and put it back, how many of each coin will you need to replace? (Note that your child keeps a record of how much she puts in and in what denomination)
Answer
Let x represent the number of dimes, which is the same as the quarters. Then 10x represents the value of the dimes (x times 10 cents), and 25x represents the value of the quarters, in cents.10x + 25x = 245
35x = 245
x = 7
Therefore, there were 7 dimes and 7 quarters totaling exactly $2.45

10(x) + (25)x = 24 500
35x = 24500
x = 700 (/100)
Nice teaser.
10(x) + (25)x = 24 500

Nice teaser.
Why don't you just look at your child's record of it and give the math a skip?
good job!
lol...i just used trial and error....i got lucky using 7 the first time....
Wouldn't you just put the same coins back?
What's a dime?
How does 245/35 = 7 become a teaser? Are there no standards?
And how does 245/35 get rated 2.15 on the fun scale and well over 1 on the difficulty scale?
