I personnally would like both....or I would pick the one with the nickles and let some one else take the one with dimes and then I would trade them a 1/2 of my shinning nickles for 1/4 of their dull dimes...that way I am still coming out on top... ...but with my luck I would loss all of the coins on my way home anyways...

Umm,where is the "Trick" in this teaser??
All things being equal, the dimes would be easier to count and less heavy to carry. I would take the dimes on those factors alone.
there is no trick in this teaser. it's like saying, would you rather have a $5 bill or $10 bill. answer: $10 bill.
mea culpa -- i initially read it: a trunk full of nickles or a trunk full of dimes.

Duhhhh.....
but of course on the other side of the pond maybe people don't know much about nickels and dimes.

but i like nickels better!! naa.. good teaser matey!
Here's me in the Antipodes struggling to figure out that a nickel is 5c and a dime is 10c (is that right?) and now they want me to know the size of the coins as well? Obviously a quarter is 25c but what is two-bits (or 1 bit for that matter)?
i came up with multiple answers, but that was not one. good one!!!
yeah i have the same problem - i'm from australia, and while i know that dimes and nickels are worth different amounts, and are presumably different sizes, i haven't the foggiest what they're actually worth, or how big they actually are
That's not really a trick, it's a more of a fact.
Wouldn't it had been more of a trick if you would have written "Which would you rather have, a trunk full of nickels or a trunk half empty of dimes?" Still says same thing, except it sounds trickier.
*yawn*
You guys seriously don't get it? He means that since the dimes are smaller, you could have a greater quantity of dimes in a half-full case and than you would with nickels in a full case. Get it?
That is if you even know the size and value of nickles and dimes...
What if you don't like money?
So what? 1/2dime~1 nickel.
Oh my gosh- there is no right or wrong answer. it's WOULD YOU RATHER! so it's an opinion.
Penny = 1c worth of copper
nickel = 5c worth of nickel (heavy cheap metal)
dime = 10c worth of silver (expensive metal)
quarter = 25c worth of silver
Of coarse this is what used to be true, they now use alloys to keep from changing the size.
A $2 roll of nickels has almost twice the volume of a $5 roll of dimes.
$200 of nickels would take the space of about $1000 of dimes. Anyone that wouldn't prefer $500 to $200 raise you hands.

Hm...Either way, it's better to have a trunk half full of dimes than a trunk half empty...
