Moi, 1 is neither a prime nor a composite number. It is called a special number.

lester... why? isnt a prime numebr defined as a number that can only be divided by itself and 1 and doesnt 1 fit into that catergory? if not WHY NOT? (i drove my math teacher crazy with this q... she says she doesnt know) *evil grin*

moi, here also you will face disappointment then coz even I was taught at school that 1 is not a prime number. It is a special number coz you get the same number when any number is multiplied by 1 and so on. Hence due to special properties 1 is called as a special number. The reason for this I guess is as given above.

I agree. There is no lower positive number than 1, It is a "special number". I was always taught at school about prime numbers and the lowest prime number is always 2.
