Brain Teasers
The Long Vigil
Riddle
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.Riddle
My history is long in telling,
Though my origins are unknown.
I watch the tender earth most carefully,
Clothed in discards long disowned.
I guard against the raucous poachers,
Praying for a gust of wind that will animate my lifeless form.
The autumn winds will signal the completion of my job.
Maybe if I had a brain I'd choose to move south for the winter.
Who am I?

Ha! I thought it was a tree so don't feel bad!
Great teaser for this time of year. Tree also popped into my mind but as I finished reading I was happy to say a Strawman
That was easy but good. I'm new here and thats the first teaser I,ve got.(only tried three)
I just read the last line and the hint and I got it!
I thought it was a leaf
Good teaser though!
Good teaser though!
I had to see the hint, but then I got it. Good one!

Nov 08, 2005
I got it after I read the part of "I wish I had a brain"...if you know the Wizard of Oz you would have gotten it too!!
Nice one. But the last line did give it away. But over here in rice land scarecrows are unkowned, so this
was a real brain teaser for my students.
was a real brain teaser for my students.
Well written! Good job.
and I thought it could be GAEA, mother earth. oh well great job. cute I must remember that,.....SCARECROW! Good job.
I got this after reading "I guard against the raucous poachers". There's nothing else that does that that I know of, but apparently it wasn't TOO easy, and, it was very haunting and poetic! I love haunting and poetic stuff! Thanks!
Beautifully written!!!
I;ve been having a little trouble with past braingles but this one I got before I finished reading the riddle. I feel much better now
i also thought it was a tree. Good teaser
Really well written and v beautiful! Cheered up my dreary day. oh and i got it wrong too . Nevermind he he he
Good one. I was lost.
I too thought it was a tree or mother nature. I like this one. The words were good and well thought up. Keep up all the good work. The people that get theirs on here got it goin on.
I also had tree in mind but it didn't quite work with all clues. The hint was all I needed to get me on to the Scarecrow as I am great OZ fan - have read alost all of the OZ books and among them Screcrow of OZ one of the best.
It was a good teaser, but it was easy...
Leaf first came to mind, but the line about a brain led me to a scarecrow. Cute and timely - thanks.
"If I only had a brain." WELL DONE! Thanks for a very well thought out teaser.
Not bad. Easy, but fun and clever. One thing, and its a little thing, is that riddles sound better when they rhyme, but that's just me!
I got it ~~~~~ right after I read the hint. The hint is not so much a hint, its the answer pretty much. I thought tree or leaves until I unveiled the hint. Good teaser tho, I enjoyed the poem. I am not being negative either...just stating the hint gives it away.
I agree with many people, here, and especially shawneeo and Christine, who definitely didn't come off as negative in my mind.
Thank's for the comments. Don't be worried about coming across in a negative way. I am good at taking the good and the bad. You can't improve unless you have the pointers to show you the way.
I have to admit, my clue is way to easy. I thought about it after submitting and wished I could have taken it back.

Got this one lol
Got It! Also thought of sun & tree, but the bit about the poachers did it for me, along with the bit about the wind.
thanx, Jim
thanx, Jim
This was really cute! And the hint about having a brain was really a neat idea! I like this! Very cute!
I thought that it was summer. Oh well
Well done Princess Thought it might be SUN Wrong again Will consentrate more next time.
real nice! The ending was the best part. Didn't get it right but it all comes together when you c the answer!
Very Good. You may have given too much away with your hints, but nicely done.
I loved it!
"If only I had a brain" gave it to me.
I thought it was well written.
Did you write it yourself?

The hint totally gives it away.
Good try tho.

I too thought of a tree or the Sun,
but then I thought the Moon, since
the Sun could be said to have
thermal winds. After reading the
last line, I couldn't help but think of all the George W. Bush jokes
(even though I believe he's more
intelligent than most want to
believe ).

After I read the last sentence and all it popped into my head!!!!!
Got it after reading the hint.Gud one.
I'll confess: I used the hint. But I have to agree that the hint does totally give it away... Regardless, I thought it was good!
i thought it was a tree too, but scarecrow makes more sense.
Good teaser.
The hint gave the whole thing right away!!!
thanks for the fun teaser
thanks for the fun teaser
clever & lotsa lotsa fun
really cute! and I needed the hint, so don't worry about that being too easy for all of us lol
I got it, but I'm also a Wizard of Oz fan.
Great Teaser. Gonna get my sister to check this one out. She's a bigger fan than I am!
Thanks!

Thanks!
Per the last line I thought it was my daughter, her theme song is "if I only had a brain". She's blonde, what do you want?
Well written and interesting.Took me 2 or 3 minutes to figure it out.
Very easy, the old clothing gave me the answer. Thanks for a good one.
"If I had a brain" made it pretty obvious
Good one! Thanks!
Nice teaser. I got it right even though I wasn't sure I was right. Thanks for posting.
very cute! I got it after the hint. Beautifully written
I got it after the hint.
The last line was a give-away. But fun none the less.
Cute. I thought it was a tree though.
I am like Kiwione. I got it before I finished reading it, and that is unusual for me. I usually struggle and only get one now and then. Easy, but I have told you before...I like easy!
I thought it was a tree, too and I usually don't read the hints! Love the trees in Michigan right now - still some beautiful, vibrant colors! Happy sunshiny day, dear friends!
Tree made sense to me as well, but alas it was wrong. The trees around here are also very pretty this time of year, though for the really bright colours you have to go further north.
This originally was a good teaser, but if you look at the comments, 52 people commented in 2005. Today you will get less than 10, because people like me are sick of all the old repeats!!!
This was a new one for me. I liked it but I had the answer by the third line. Sometimes these are easy other times not.
Nothing cheerful today, Mr. Doehead?
New for me, too. Tree crossed my mind; I knew it didn't fit, but I couldn't think past that. Then I checked the hint, and, voila`, there was the answer!
Awesome! I love this. Ofcourse, the similar id does help matters. No just kiddin. I was thinking tree at first but I read it again and I was like "Scarecrow, duh!" Fun.
I thought of leaves, but used the hint. Love the poetry in the riddle.
Still cute, still easy. I also thought of Fall leaves for a minute, but we don't have much color this year.
Hi K & G. Have a good one.
Hi K & G. Have a good one.
thought it was goose because of "move south for the winter"
hahahaha that was funny! good one
Almost gave up on this one but then the answer hit me.
On the first reading, I was picturing a skull lying in the desert (I know: gross!) but on the second reading I figured out the scarecrow! Really nice teaser!
Was trying things that just didn't fit-saw the hint & FINALLY got it!
That was really well written! I enjoyed reading through it, but knew the answer the second I read "Maybe if I had a brain..." Excellent teaser!
Easy teasy, or so I thought. Looking at all the comments, I guess this was not as obvious as I had believed. I like the writing. I tend to make all riddles rhyme, which can make them sound forced, sing-song, or hoaky. I kind of liked the prose/poetic style of this one.
Fun, easy and entertaining teaser. I got it very quickly after reading the last three lines which gave it away.
