Apple Picking Contest
Logic-Grid
Logic Grid puzzles come with a handy interactive grid that will help you solve the puzzle based on the given clues.Logic-Grid
It's apple season and five friends went apple picking last weekend at the Sleepy Hollow orchard, a local orchard where you can buy a bag and then pick your own apples. It was a beautiful day and the friends had a fine time. Sometime during the afternoon, the apple picking became a contest and the friends battled to see who could pick the most apples from the highest places in the shortest time. The end result is that they picked far more apples than they had intended, though they had a grand time doing so. Determine what each friend's favorite type of apple was, how many bushels each friend picked, what each friend's fastest time was for picking a bagful, and how many apples each friend ended up eating while they picked.
1. Ellen was the fastest apple picker but the one who loves McIntosh apples was only one minute behind her. The man whose favorite apples are McIntosh picked five bushels of apples but he didn't eat the most apples.
2. The person who picked one bushel ate more apples than Debbie, but ate two less than the one who loves Macoun apples. Brian didn't like McIntosh apples.
3. James picked more apples than the woman who loved Cortland apples but less than the person who only ate one apple. Jeremy didn't eat two apples.
4. The person who loved Macoun apples picked more bushels than the person who picked a bag in 12 minutes, but less than the person who ate two apples.
5. The person who picked the Red Delicious apples had a faster time than the person who ate five apples but a slower time than the person who picked two bushels.
6. The person who loved Empire apples had the slowest time, but James was only two minutes ahead of her. Ellen picked two bushels of apples.

I managed to get everything right except how many each of them ate.... but good one!
Cute!
I just couldnt get it tried 3 times and my logic just kept getting messed up. Really good one!
Good Job!!!!!
A really good one! Very tough for me It took many readings and a lot more thinking than I like to do on Saturdays, but I enjoyed it very much.
Whew! That one took a while, 35 minutes, but I finally got it. Great teaser, had me stumped for a while, I had to read over the clues at least 20 times, but solveable, which gets a kudos from me, what with it being so complicated. Keep 'em coming!
This is a good puzzle - it took me a lot longer than the usual monthly puzzle on Puzzlers Paradise which is where it came from.
Well done, clever, keep these coming
I was sooo confused. Had to restart the grid a couple times.
Maybe I should stop skipping meals - the brain needs fuel to work right. haha
Well done. Now if only I could learn to make one this hard with only 6 clues.

I see you are growing a good teaser list. Great job on this one.
this was fun I had to reread it five times wile working it out
WOW you worked hard on this one
This one was fun. I did it after the #2 Apple pickers, so I had your style down. It took about 10 minutes and I didn't have to use paper, so I don't know if that means it is easier or not. I liked it!
I got the number of apples they ate wrong too...not sure where I went wrong..good one...I'll try again to see if I can fix it
I LOVE THIS ONE! I actually tried Apple Pickers #2 first and LOVED IT!!!, so I tried this one. Took tons of thinking, and perfect for a Saturday afternoon! Thanks!
Very nice. Had to put it away and come back to it.
Liked it alot...Very confusing with all the different numbers to keep up with - took abou 15 -20 minutes, but it was a hard fought battle...just glad I won.
Very Challenging.
I got everything right, except for two entries.
I got everything right, except for two entries.
Can anyone help me with the explanation?
@Brainer23 - Ellen took 9min (clue 1). James took 13min (clue 6 - 2min faster than the slowest). Debbie took 15min (clue 6 - slowest was female, and we know it's not Ellen).
Debbie loved Empire (clue 6 - she's the slowest). Ellen loved Cortland (clue 3 - it's a woman, and we know it's not Debbie). Jeremy loves McIntosh (clue 1 - 1min behind slowest, so 10min - limits us to Brian or Jeremy - but we know it's not Brian from clue 2). This also tells us Jeremy took 10min, which then means Brian took 12min.
James loves Macoun (we're down to Brian or James, but clue 4 tells us it can't be the same as the person who took 12min, which rules out Brian). This leaves Brian loving Red Delicious.
Jeremy picked 5 bushels (clue 1). Ellen picked 2 bushels (clue 6). Brian picked 1 bushel (clue 2 - it's not Debbie or James (Macoun), which only leaves Brian).
Debbie ate 2 apples (clue 3 - it's not Jeremy. Clue 4 - it's not James (Macoun) or Brian (12min). Leaves Debbie or Ellen. But if it was Ellen, Clue 4 would say both James (Macoun) and Brian (12min) picked less than 2 bushels, which isn't possible).
James picked 3 bushels and Debbie picked 4 bushels (clue 4 - James (Macoun) picked less than Debbie (2 eaten)).
Brain ate 3 apples and James ate 5 (clue 2 - Brian (1 bushel) ate more than Debbie but 2 less than James (Macoun)).
Jeremy ate 1 apple (clue 3 - we're down to Ellen or Jeremy, but it has to be someone who picked more than James). This leaves Ellen eating 4 apples.
James picked 3 bushels and Debbie picked 4 bushels (clue 4 - James (Macoun) picked less than Debbie (2 eaten)).
