I Prefer the '53 Myself
Rebus brain teasers use words or letters in interesting orientations to represent common phrases.
If O2 is O=O.
H2O is H-O-H,
and CO2 is O=C=O,
then what might this represent?
=James=
HintWould MQ be M-Q or M=Q?

Answer
"Bond, James Bond."
In chemistry, particularly organic chemistry, molecules are drawn using - and = to represent covalent bonds between the atoms making a molecule. (There are triple bonds too, but I can't represent those using the basic character set). A covalent bond has both atoms sharing an electron pair, or sharing two electron pairs in a double bond. In the initial examples, there are representations of oxygen, water and carbon dioxide molecules. The advantage in organic chemistry, for these representations, is that larger and larger molecules could have the same atoms but in different configurations, (such as ketones and aldehydes, for example).
The title is a quote from Bond in Dr No, referring to the age of the champagne bottle he was defending himself with. The hint is simply a reference to Bond's boss, M, and the research and development man, Q.

| Wow. I had no idea, and I'm glad I checked the answer as soon as I was sure of that. The answer was really good though, and it made me think I probably could've gotten it if I thought "outside the box"..... oh well, maybe next time! (I rated this fun and hard, just because.) |

| And here I took chemistry, but I was thinking too much about other life items. This is a top quality teaser, to be able to slip by this character, without getting another good answer for it. Well done! |

| i figured, obviously, James Bond, but thought the use of double bonds, not signle would somehow make "double oh seven" but couldnt work it out - very nicely done. Thought it was easy enough, but clever and fun. good job! |

| Absolutely loved it, though I "jumped the gun" and went with "James Bond" for my answer (the actual answer is much better). Glad I didn't see the title or the hint. As a 7 fan it would have made it too easy! Thanks for submitting. |

| Had no trouble getting the answer, but I figured it seemed like the clue was too much for such a simple answer, so I kept trying to figure out more.
Not to seem harsh, but when I decided to read the hint before checking the answer, I was sure there had to be something to the single bond versus double bond thing. Posing the question of whether MQ would use a single or double bond seems a bit unfair (especially as a hint) when the type of bond has no bearing whatsoever. I think it would have been better if you had worked the M-Q thing in there without referencing the type of bond. Just my thoughts |

| Say What!
Mind giving me that in Layman's Language? |
crazy10man
Sep 13, 2009
| Very clever!
In "layman's" terms, and reduced down:
= in chemical equations, means bond; so =james= literally translates to:
"bond, james bond"
of course I didn't know this until I read Freddie's great explanation. |

Sep 13, 2009
| I agree with the previous comment; I came up with "Double Bond James Double Bond". I believe it would have made more sense if it had been -James-.
But otherwise a great teaser! |

Sep 13, 2009
| I just ended up getting "James Bond." I figured = was a double-bond so that didn't help me out.. nor did the title which made me try to make it into some kind of car lmao....
The hint didn't help me at all since I've never seen any Bond movies |

| Although I recognized the arrangement of elements as representing oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide, not having taken a unit in organic in over 40 years, the word 'bond' escaped me; therefore, I could only come up with James II (British king). Glad so many enjoyed this! |

| I first thought "007", seeing the double bond reference. Then I thought, "Wait; Bond; James Bond".

| I spent two minutes pondering before the word "bond" paired with "James" in my head to make the answer. The great thing about senility is I get to have fun solving a puzzle I solved three years ago. I know I did it. I gave this teaser a star. |

| Although the teaser was pretty easy for anyone with even a remedial knowledge of chemistry, I enjoyed it. Whether or not a single bond or double bond should have been used does not change the quality of the teaser, and since only one answer made sense (who is Bond Bond James Bond Bond?) what does it really matter? It was refreshing to see an original teaser. |
