Lend Me a Hand
Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.
One and halfscore, the posts are showing,
win, place, and show united is rejection as a marking;
the middle five of the whole, a type of setting,
the last eight is a man prone to writing.
Four in one, its middle two is a cannon booming,
with bursts of fire like a hundred stars dancing;
within that center is a country if you're looking,
a city you'll find,if you focus on the beginning.
Its first quarter is a letter with a greeting,
the next,a memory with one millennium missing;
then a duke,a prince or a king,
the last,an endless catch in the sport of fishing.
QUESTION: What is the word?
HintThe following makes the riddle a piece of cake.
Eleven posts is the number of letters in the spelling,
top three finishers,a mark used in correcting,
the last eight is an author of love and loving,
four is the count after syllabicating.
The cannon in the middle is a candle for celebrating,
in the city lives the shepherd who gives a blessing,
the country is Islamic,rich and oil-producing,
all these found in the center of the readers calling.
The letter or mark to the past is referring,
the memory allows none but watching,
the royal blood, their kind must have a bearing,
the catch is a fish with its tail missing.
QUESTION: What is the reader's calling?
Hide
Answer
The mark is the letter X in Greek writing,
the memory is Read-Only with its M lacking,
the royalty mentioned are male in being,
the fish is a CERO, its tail O missing.
The Greek letter is CHI,former its meaning,
ROMAN is a candle,a numeral or a font setting,
the city is ROMA, OMAN,the country just reminding,
the author is a ROMANCER, romance is his choosing.
CHI,RO,MAN, and CER,syllables we're adding,
CHI and ROMANCER, the eleven that were showing,
it is now clearer than the future he is telling,
that CHIROMANCER is the word and reading the future,his calling.

| Even after reading the hint and the answer, I still need a Thesauraus, a Dictionary and a translater. I would honestly like to preserve the brain of any person in this entire universe who can comprehend that riddle without looking at the answer! If I am going to spend precious hours of my life trying to solve something, I would like to know that I have at least some small chance of success! |

| It was really very hard; I didn't get it, even after mulling over it a long time.
On the other hand, it was very well written and quite original! |

| Very interesting. Each portion of the riddle and the hint make sense, though it is very difficult to follow as the portions aren't separated. I enjoyed it. Thanks. |
