How do you figure out these kinds of problems
in school I always get them on a test but never understand them.

Like most math problems there's more than one way to do it. For this the easiest way is:

Each pig adds two extra feet, so there are (44 - 30) / 2 = 7 pigs and (30/2) - 7 = 8 peacocks.
