Wow! A great, tough teaser. The 5 letter was easy enough: I had timed (aimed, tamed, tired, timid, times). The 6 letter was a little harder. I eventually got caster (faster, Custer, canter, casher, castor, castes) with a couple of near misses: slinks (blinks, stinks, sl_nks, slicks, slings, slinky) limped (wimped, lumped, lipped, limbed, limpid, limpet). As in: "He's such a loser - he wimped out on trying to get a better solution after only one hour!" ;-)

This was beautiful. I wrote a program to search the official Scrabble word list. I found 239 5-letter, 25 6-letter, and one 7-letter answer. (No 8, 9, or 10). Check out http://braingle.jcook.net for my findings. I won't post the 7-letter, since I didn't figure it out on my own.
