Caesar Box

In Cryptography teasers, a phrase or expressions has been encoded in some way (frequently by replacing letters with other letters). You need to figure out the encoding method and then decode the message to find the answer.

What does this message say?

G T Y O R J O T E O U I A B G T

Answer

"Great Job You Got It"

This type of code is known as a Caesar Box (Julius Caesar was the first to write codes this way.) To decipher the message, simply divide the code into four groups of four (you can also divide them into groups such as 5 groups of 5 or 6 groups of 6 depending on the number of letters in the phrase), and rearrange them vertically like this...
G T Y O
R J O T
E O U I
A B G T

Then you read vertically column by column.

I never look at the hint unless I'm telling it to someone else.
So I didn't get it. I've done that kind of code before, but this was HARD. I think I'll look at hints now.

This was very difficult for me. I checked the hint but didn't catch on. If it had said it was an annogram I might have gotten it. Yea, right! I'm new to the board which is no excuse for being a half wit. I think I'll get some of theese as I go along. Although I was clueless this was a good one.

nice one but sorry this isnt Caesars code, this is an old greek code used in times of war. Caesars code is meant to replace each letter of the alphabet with the one that is x places after it, were x at the time that caesar used it was 5.

I simply loved it. I am new to cryptography and dont know much about encoding-decoding.It took me almost 30 minutes to figure this out and really the answer is so rewarding.I didnt use the hint and was about to hit the answer but gave it a last thought and considered the title ' caesar box' and i figured it out.its going to my favourites.thanks

I have never seen this type of code before so did not have a clue how to do it.
Question for those who are familiar with it, how do you deal with a phrase that does not contain a square number of letters? Do you use "fillers" or can that phrase not be encrypted into this code?

May 08, 2014

I had no clue.
Rather eat soup with a fork than figure that one out.

May 08, 2014

That IS a Caesar box also known as a columnar transpostion cipher. A Caesar cipher is a different code where letters are simply switched down the alphabet.
