You would need 10 coins. In order to make change for a nickel, you would need 5 pennies.
well there are not too many half dollars in circulation so it would be ideal to have 3 quaters, 2 dimes, 1 nichol, and 4 pennies (10 coins). And no, you do not need to have 5 pennies, the point is not to make change, it is that you want to have the least amount of coins that will give you every combination up to a dollar
It might be nice to specify the currency of the coins you are talking about... we don't have quarter dollars here in new Zealand.
you took the only teaser i knew(and could possibly ever submit to this site)!!!!!!!
zero, bring a charge card
I got an answer similar to thebuddawithin, of 4 pennies, 2 nickels, 1 dime, and 4 quarters. Didn't include 1/2 dollars.
I don't think half-dollars exist anymore in Canada. Good try though!
If we choose the the arguments of
thebuddhawithin over those of cnmne, we can handle a one dollar "situation" with a dollar bill and ZERO coins! Then we could substitute 2 nickels and 1 dime for the nickel and the 2 dimes and, thereby, also minimize the total value of the coins needed.

there was nothing wrong with this teaser...half dollars ARE still around and (s)he says american dollars AND why would you need change for a nickel....
Huh.
TeenWiz, it said AMERICAN coins... nothing to do with Canada
Good teaser, but I agree a hint explaining what coins they have in America would have made it easier for people who don't know.
