The Beast

Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.

It roars like thunder,
And rises higher,
While breathing fire,
This wingless wonder.

If it leaves its cave,
Drags us in its tail,
Over hill and dale,
Then you must be brave.

Early morning flight,
Silently it flies,
Slowly in the skies.
Hides before the night.

My kingdom at least,
To the brave young knight,
If you name it right.

What is this huge beast?

Answer

A Hot Air balloon.

Very cute! I thought it was the sun but after seeing the answer it makes perfect sense
slimkop*
Dec 07, 2005

it doesn't make sense. I 'm sorry, I bet your really good at this, but a hot-air balloon doesn't have a tail. Have you though about how many answers can actually be true:
1. The sun (even more likely than a balloon)
2. A comet (this actually does have a tail)
3. A Phoenix (if you like Harry Potsniffer)
blm12
Dec 07, 2005

It couldn't be the sun because it "drags us in its tail" and also not a rocket since astronauts are in the head of the rocket. It's wingless so it can't be a phoenix. Also "silently it flies" knocks out rocket. I was thinking sun but the "drags us" line stumped me. Good riddle.
lindquist_25Aus*

I thought for sure it was a dragon. I didn't think it really made sense for it to be a hot air balloon but whatever.

Dec 07, 2005

I like the poem aspect a lot! That was very diff. I think the clues were all good except for "hides before the night". That was why I thought it was the sun. I don't think it impossible for a balloon to fly at night, is it? And, about leaving it's cave, which I guess is the ropes and all holding it down, that wa a little, uhmmmrrrgggmmhh. As for you "poopstain" you say that the people talkin crap about this peom needs to show some respect.... well i think you need to show some respect with your username, don't you??? NO, no, no, no. I can not tell a lie. The description is all wrong for a Beast. The rest of the description is wrong: A cave, No. This is not a believable Teaser. I can not consider a Hot air Ballon a Beast. Good Try, but not convincing......... But keep them coming.

How can it fly silently if it roars like thunder? Very contradictory. I didn't care for it, it was very misleading, and a hot air balloon does not fit all the clues. I thought it was a volcano, which fits almost all of them, more that an air ballon does. Sun could have also worked, but I don't see how a hot air balloon does.
chidam11Ain*

It rises with a roar, but flies silently. Please the the lines below it properly.
bobiscool134*us
Dec 07, 2006

At first I thought dragon...but...then you said wingless, I thought Sun. In the morning, Its like fire coming from the ground. If you watch it on the beach, you get the roar of the waves. In the afternoon it silently goes through the sky. Then at night it drags many people to watch it as it set. But, once I saw the answer I realized my mistake, you did a very good job on this.

This teaser was really good and it described a hot air baloon accurately The cave it leaves is its hanger and its meta phorical people . i got it really easily. Keep up the good work. thx
scallioAus*
Dec 07, 2006

Beautifully written. Loved it!

To those who made comments:
It could NOT have been a DRAGON because dragons have WINGS.

It ROARS as it takes off because the fiery hot air thing-a-ma-jigger is on full power. It flies silently after it's up because it can reduce the fire thingy to a whisper.

This was a wonderful teaser and is very accurate for a hot air balloon.

scallioAus*
Dec 07, 2006

Volcano? A volcano does not take you along, doesn't leave a cave (hangar), doesn't fly silently after it's in the air and doesn't stop flying when night comes.

Sun? The sun doesn't take you along, doesn't leave a cave (hangar) and doesn't roar as it takes off.

Comet? Sure they have a tail, but do they roar as they take off and then soar silently? They sure don't take you along or leave a cave. (If you belong to a whacko cult you might believe you could be taken along.)

Phoenix? A phoenix definitely has wings. The teaser said wingless. Does it roar fire on take off? No. I believe it is on fire as it dies. And I don't think it would take you along.

Rocket? No wings, roars fire on take off, soars silently, but a rocket is not finished flying as night comes. It takes you along but in the front rather than the tail (basket). And it certainly couldn't have been space shuttle either because they have wings.

Dragon? Alas, dragons also have wings.

I liked this teaser and felt if described a hot air balloon beautifully!
ThelA*
Dec 07, 2006

I loved it! A very well-written and accurate riddle.

Another argument against the dragon: even if it was an Oriental dragon -which I believe are wingless- they can fly at night.
Pizzazz2uAus*
Dec 07, 2006

A very fantastic teaser! Don't allow any of the previous comments to get the writer down!! I believe the teaser is a magnificent one. It will make you think in several directions until you find that your answers will want you to believe it is only one in particular.... a dragon! But, further analyzing the clues will show your answer will only be the hot air balloon. Keep these coming! I enjoyed it, immensely! Crazy! Wild! Yet, teasingly entertaining!
highway101*us
Dec 07, 2006

Every year there are balloon races south of where I live. Your clues were right on. They take off with a roar (like a beast) and they drift silently over my house. All the balloons are grounded at night for safety reasons. I thought you did an excellent job.

For those who say hot air balloons aren't beasts: they must have never seen Tony the Tiger flying overhead in hot air balloon races. HAH!!

Anyways, I thought this was great, though my guesses were "way off" (though there seemed to be a lot of us who thought these "red herrings"!!) I dabbled in thinking it was dragon, until I decided it had to be ol' wingless sun, because the sun does drag us through the universe thanks to its motion within our galaxy!

Dec 07, 2009

I commented on this like, twenty million years ago, but it was the daily teaser again, and I just read all the comments. I thought it was the Sun, the first time, AND this time! I didn't remember the answer from all those years ago.

The critics? Well, if you have something to say, you should say it politely, because otherwise it's basically throwing mud, and that doesn't do anyone any good, and it makes the mud-slinger look like an &55.

"a Hot Air Balloon is not a Beast"? That's absurd. This is a RIDDLE. In a riddle, you're making metaphors. Anything can be a "beast" in poetry, literature, metaphor. "Beast" was a perfect metaphor for a hot air balloon in this riddle, no question about it. If you don't understand metaphor, do some reading on it, because it's one of the fundamentals of language and art.
VitalStatisticA*
Dec 07, 2009

I'm sorry, but I didn't like this one much. I don't think balloon fits the clues.

I was thinking lava until the morning and night verse, then I had no idea.

Balloons don't breathe fire. The burner does, but most, if not all the flame is re-consumed into the mouth of the balloon envelope (from here - http://www.planoballoonfest.org /about_balloons.html)

I don't get the cave reference at all, nor the tail reference.

Balloons can fly at night. There may be rules that say they can't, but I'm sure there are people out there who break the rules, as well as adventurers who try to circumnavigate the globe, or cross the English Channel or other such exploits that go on for several days or weeks.

Still, it was well written, so kudos for that
