THIS WEEK... It's sweeps week! Five major television networks battle it out every Wednesday night on prime time TV for television dominance. These networks skillfully, or not so skillfully, play out their best advertising strategies to grab as many viewers as possible for their 8 pm time slot. Who will win?!!? TO BE REVEALED IN THE NEXT TEASER....
Actually, just figure out the shows that the networks aired, what the advertising strategy was for each, how many people watched (ratings), and the genres of these shows.
Networks: ROX, The WC, MBC, 123, TWTV
Contenders: "Loss", "Smalltown", "Crime Scene Inventory", "During Prison Break", and "The Octopus"
Genres: drama, sci-fi, comedy, reality, animated
No. of viewers: 13 million, 10.4 million, 5.5 million, 3.8 million, 1.2 million

"Smalltown" had greater ratings than "The Octopus". However, it did NOT receive the highest ratings.
Promotional giveaways were distributed by the 123 network.
Explosions were watched by 3.8 million viewers.
"Crime Scene Inventory" is a sci-fi show.
The reality show did very poorly once again, receiving the lowest ratings.
Billboard ads drew in 10.4 million viewers.
MBC was able to book very famous celebrities for an episode of their comedy.
The loveable 2-D characters of "Loss" were pasted inside every magazine.
"During Prison Break" is not a reality show.
The studio audience of "Smalltown" was in fits of laughter.
ROX came in second in the ratings.
About half of the 1.2 million viewers that tuned into this show were drawn in by promotional giveaways.
TWTV, that did not air the drama or reality series, was followed by 123 in the ratings.

Answer
The ROX network played a very intense episode of the drama "During Prison Break", in which our favourite cell dwellers went through the physically and emotionally demanding task of community service. This was advertised on billboards everywhere, and an impressive 10.4 million people watched. The WC aired the ever popular "Loss", the animated series about seagulls lost at sea. No real surprise as is takes the lead with 13 million viewers this week. The WC ran an ad campaign for "Loss" in many popular magazines.
MBC's never disappointing comedy, "Smalltown", may have been a bit disappointing with only 5.5 million viewers, a sub-average score for the network. Too bad! Special guest stars Rose Welling and Tom Kent had amazing chemistry.
123 aired the fan favourite reality tv show "The Octopus". Ratings have been steadily declining, evident by this week's measly 1.2 million. Looks like the free promo cards didn't do much.
TWTV original series "Crime Scene Inventory" came in second to last with 3.8 million viewers. The action-packed sci-fi series had a combustible too many that screamed desperate for ratings.

Me too! Very fun, keep it coming! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Great work! Very enjoyable to solve.
Very good puzzle.
On the subject of network names, I don't know if it was the same in the US, but back in the prudish '50s, public toilets were euphemistically known as "water closets" in Britain (I'm showing my age ), and most public toilets had the letters WC on the door, and you often saw signs pointing to "The WC". If I've just trodden on a subtle joke, I'm sorry, but I wasn't sure if it meant the same in the US.
Does it feel good to have people still absorbed in a puzzle you wrote, several years after you published it? just think how many hours have been spent by many people around the world on the puzzle you wrote.
Well done!
