There are two rules that need to be followed when doing these series.

12, 6, 3, 10, 5, 16, 8, ?, ?, ?

17, 52, 26, 13, 40, 20, 10, 5, ?, ?, ?

What do these two patterns have in common?

Answer

1st pattern is 4, 2, 1
2nd pattern is 16, 8, 4

The rules are:
If odd, multiply by three and add one.
If even, halve the number.

Both the numbers are doomed to a 4,2,1 pattern.
