Last week, Jude and four friends all went off for a drive to a different place (one went to Bywater). They traveled at speeds of 20, 30, 35, 40, and 45 MPH, and traveled 20, 30, 60, 70, and 80 miles. From the information given, determine each one's speed, the distance each traveled, and each person's destination.

1. Jan drove 80 miles to her destination.
2. The driver who covered 60 miles went at 40 mph; it wasn't Jess, who went to Overfield.
3. It took two of the friends 40 minutes each to reach their destinations. Neither Jed nor the driver to Downlea was one of them.
4. Jake took 2 hours to reach Upwood.
5. The drive to Underford is 30 miles.

Great teaser! Tough...I had to do it twice as I kept getting the speed confused with the miles! Very witty names also. Keep 'em coming!

Nice one! I had to do it several times because I kept messing up the grid. It's been a long time since I've done algebra, so digging back into my brain was fun!

This was a really hard one. I am lousy at math and just can not do it. It reminds me too much of those darn word problems I had to do back in high school and junior high. I have not looked at the answer yet and will keep trying to work on it, but this one keeps getting put on the back burner because I don't do math, but like I said, I will try to do it again. I think your teaser was really good and difficult but for people far smarter than I. Please keep them coming and I will keep trying to do them.

Very well designed puzzle. I am an engineer, and the miles and MPH gave me trouble, but eventually it all fell out in the end. Don't know if you'll ever read this comment at this late date, but keep them coming.

2. The driver who covered 60 miles went at 40 mph; it wasn't Jess, who went to Overfield.

I thought this was two seperate clues, the second one being "it wasn't jess who went to Overfield", but Jess did go to overfield.

As this teaser proves, we may be able to operate a sophisticated computer, but to succeed, we still need such basic skills as math and language. Without them, we may become "stumped" even by a simple game.

Good one. Had to dust off those rusty brain cells to do the math!

tom is absolutely right, keeping up basic skills is more important than we think. I had to start 3 times, because I got it backwards in my mind that the 60 mi. at 40 mph was one of the 40 min rides lol, I bet I'm not the only one! Thanks SO much for making me think hard!!!!! I'm literally one of those walking encyclopedias of useless information, and some useful as well, but I was told by my male 6th grade teacher that "girls don't 'get' or need math." when I asked him a question, (I realized in hindsight that he probably just didn't know the answer), but I took it to heart and thought that was why I didn't understand it in the first place, as I did most everything else. Teachers beware what you say!!!

Good teaser - though I'd hate to get stuck behind those slowcoaches! I'll bet Jan saw snails whizzing past her.
