Why would insurance companies be interested in sand at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico?

Answer

The layers of sand tell when a hurricane will hit. There is a pattern to the layers. Every 300 years or so, there is a category 5 hurricane. Insurance companies can use that theory to increase their warning for homes that are around that area.

I think this actually shows some promise, but it should have been started differently. If insurence companies cared about that, they'd be racing all over the world.
