What exactly does "tan" mean? I got a scientific calculator a few months ago and since then have been trying to figure it out.

Tangent. In a right-angled triangle, it's the ratio of the opposite side to the adjacent side of an angle. In a Cartesian plane, draw a ray from the origin. The tangent ratio of the angle between that ray (called the terminal side) and the ray along the x-axis (called the initial side) is defined as the y-coordinate of any point on the ray divided by the corresponding x-coordinate. If that sounds confusing, just key it into your calculator. You'll learn it at school soon. ;)
