We're waiting for you to tell us about the earthquake clean-up progress.

I think the punctuation in the title is atrocious enough to fend off even the most seasoned of Internet-goers. But that's just my opinion, of course.

All right, the clean up process is going very slowly as we have had two if not more dumpings of thick snow in the last month.
But other than that the contractors are working very well, as the have already made up a draft plan of what the new city will look like!!!
They are thinking about having a mono rail going from the university into the square(cathedral square).
If you guys haven't heard this, Christchurch had another 6.3 after a 5.7 on the 13th of June, which brought the entrance of the Cathedral down, including the stained rose glass window, so the Cathedral is most likely to be bulldozed now.
Anymore questions feel free to ask!!!

can you watch them filming "The Hobbit"?

So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real".

That's really a shame about the cathedral having to be dozed. So what was your experience WHILE the quake/s were happening? I'm sure most of us have never been in one!

Life... can be so many things... how can anyone ever think they are RIGHT? HAhahahahahahaha!!!!!

Actually, all of us have been in one. Earthquakes which are 1 or 2 on the scale are extremely common and usually aren't felt.

I live in ohio so i have never realy felt an eathquake until recently. I felt the eathquake that was in washington dc i think. I was visiting my bf who is going to west virgina university and was in his appartment when the building started to shake. I was scared at first because I never experienced one before, but his roomate was from california and said that it was minor compared to there. I called my mom and told her i felt the earthquake and of course she didn't feel anything in ohio. I told her i was excited that I experienced my first eatrhquake and she said i was weird. I thought it was cool. Hopefully thats the worst one i experience though.

I was reading an article of the most major events of 2011. One of the events was the serious earthquake in Christchurch. I looked through my PMs and spud said she lives in Christchurch. I was like OMG .

What are you looking at?

I've felt two, but they were both very minor and nothing like what the really big ones are like. I felt the recent DC one, which was just one of the strangest experiences ever! I was cleaning my windows with a friend, and she asked me if my putting the window down, which I was doing, was making the wall shake? I was like, huh? So, I pulled the window up and put it down again, but while doing that, I could feel the whole house wobbling back and forth and it felt like it could just fall down like a house of toy blocks.

The other one was when I lived in NYC, in the 1980s. It was about 2am, and I had woken up and was walking to the bathroom, when I felt the whole floor kind of shift under me! I stopped and thought, "That had to have been an earthquake...", then went to the bathroom and went back to bed. The next day I completely forgot about it until a friend asked me if I had felt the earthquake!

Thinking about all our New Zealand friends at the time of the first anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake.
In your reflection, may you find solace and peace to continue rebuilding your lives.

I live in So California and have for over 50 years now... we definately have earthquakes and have lived to talk about them.

Shawn you asked what it feels like... first there is that sudden fear of "What the" especially if it begins on a hard note. Some earthquakes "roll" in... and get bigger as they continue; some hit hard and fast, then go away. Some of those that hit hard also shake the house side to side, while others just feel like a roller coaster.

As a parent, after the initial scare you call out to your family to join you and get in a safe place - inside door jambs. If we can, I prefer to go outside... let the house fall down without me inside.

But if the house is shaking back and forth, it really can be hard to walk and better to seek protection.

There's an uneasiness about the walls and ceilings and is this the big one that is going to bring about total destruction of the house you live in.

During the 87' Whittier earthquake, we had plaster break open with 1/2" gaps and we almost lost our front porch as the limestone bricks crumbled under the shaking. If it hadn't been for a couple 2" galvanized pipes that had been installed by a previous owner to minimize the sag in the sagging main beam - I am sure one whole corner of our porch and roof would have come down. I think that one was measured as 5.9. The epicenter was some 15 miles from my home, but the fault line goes through my town within 1/4 mile.

The Northridge earthquake shook the house about the same, but damage was almost nil. It was more powerful, but the epicenter was 35 miles away and we were not close to the fault line. So location does matter in the case of all earthquakes.

I am not sure I have done your question justice... because unless you have lived through a major earthquake, it is sort of hard to explain. But I would rather live in earthquake country than hurricane or twister areas... at least we don't have to sit and watch the news to find out if we are going to be affected or not.

Thanks RGW! Like you said, you kinda have to be there, but I appreciate you sharing your experiences! I hope I'm never in a big, or small, quake. I agree with you about the tornadoes and hurricanes; I would NOT want to live in any of those "zones".
