Having your riddle copied

Out of curiosity not vanity, I googled my 'Cor!' brain teaser, and it was used in a teaser website, Riddle Dude, which apparently features a daily teaser where the blogger declares the first person to answer correctly the winner. What made me laugh was that somebody asked the same question on a answers website, and got a reply that was different from my answer and from the incorrect answer in Riddle Dude! Has anyone has similar experience with their teasers?

Yeah 
Someone made a Youtube channel making videos of brain teasers, and he stole one of the ones I made.  And many others here on Braingle.

A quick search found one of my teasers on another site as "The Teaser of the Day". They did give credit to Braingle, so I suppose it's OK.

Yeah, somebody wrote a book full of brain teasers that other people made up but didn't give anyone credit.

I don't see how someone can do that. You have to give credit to the author, don't you? Especially when they are making money on them.

If the teaser was, for example, under the CC-BY-NC-SA licence, it can't be used for commercial purposes, can it? (Not to mention no attribution.) The author of that book might be in trouble...
But what does everyone think about such actions? Are they giving people a better chance to see good teasers? Or is it plain theft?

Theft is theft. It's against the law, wherever you are.
I want to see if any of teasers were stolen.
Parents are supposed to "protect" their kids, but there's a real distinction between protection and unrealistically keeping children away from reality. - Life_Sucks --- One of my teasers was featured as the Teaser of the Day! :D Sept. 18 2011 :D YAY! |

It shouldn't be a problem if it's an old chesnut - the "man overboard" rebus, for example - or a teaser based on a simple concept that anyone can come up with. Was it copied word for word? Or was it the same basic idea, but worded differently? If it's the latter, it's not necessarily a matter of theft.

Once in a while, authors thank the 'thieves' for making their work accessible and popular...

I picked a teaser from CoolRiddles at random, and almost instantly recognised it as a teaser from Braingle, by pandastampede. However,

I have made brochures, booklets, etc. for various things, such as private auctions, retreats, etc., and I was always told that if I were to use a poem, story, etc. I had to include the author, otherwise, someone could say that "I" or the organization I was working for were trying to take credit for what I were using. Even if money weren't being made on my work, you can't take credit for another persons work. I think it happens all the time though. If something, like a teaser is changed, ever so slightly though, I believe the person is in the clear. Not sure. Kinda like a recipe, change one ingredient, and it's "your" original.

Have you heard of the one-liner? If you copy from one person, it's plagiarism, but if you copy from lots of people, it's research.  If you just change a little bit of it, it's still copying. After all, some people put their work under licences that allows distribution but not modification.

I cut and paste a lot of articles on fb, from various places like MSNBC. I always try to include where the story came from and who wrote it. I recently read a short story that said at the end of it, that no part of it could be published, etc. not even parts of it. Nor could it be altered, and then redistributed. So, as far as I was concerned, that particular story was NOT to be cut and pasted. You don't see that very often though. I think what those that are using teasers from braingle are banking on, is that no one effected, will go to the trouble to investigate, or seek legal council on the matter. After all, they are just teasers. But if someone is making a book, using someone elses work, even if they are "just" teasers . . . then IDK, that's pretty shady. And we have to remember, a lot of teasers here on braingle are not originals, so then what?

I think that's just a fancy way of saying 'all rights reserved' (and it appears on 99% of the books I've read). If it's not in the Public Domain and you didn't put it in Creative Commons (some rights reserved), it's automatically all rights reserved. Of course, I highly doubt if anyone would sue for copying to Facebook.

Especially when most are equipped with the ability to share through emails or different sites, such as fb - the links to these sites are available right there, to share the article. . .

You really don't know how thick the ice really is, though. We're on good ground, but they are stealing ideas. If we could prove that we had it first or made it up, we could get it taken down, or even better, make them recompensate!
