You know, I was interested in seeing it, seeing as how I had read the novel recently. I wanted to see Martin Freeman and Stephen Fry doing some good comedy. That is until I recently found out that they managed to stretch a short read into three three hour long films to be spaced out within three years!  The clear money-lust turned me right off.
Peter Jackson needs to invest in an actual editor.
I may watch this travesty, but I would prefer to be an editor if I could. You know, get a hold of the three films and then scrap all of the boring bits and actually have a watchable product. That might be okay. I wish he would be kind enough to bring that to the theaters, though.

I'm not sure about that, Rog. I'm looking forward to a more indepth look at Middle Earth, or as the old Nordic pagans used to say "Midgaard".
New movie idea: Thor meets LOTR  Make it happen Hollywood.

Can't they just make some mockumentary on that and let the Hobbit stay the Hobbit? The narrative's going to be choppy and strange, now that it's being artificially chopped in three.

On the contrary, I think a quality film based on literature will always absorb more time than it seems when reading the original. The details are faster recreated in your mind and for a film to go into the plot detail Peter Jackson incorporates into his work, it takes time to shoot and to play out. Think about how a book can span perhaps two years and yet we read the book in two days... when we read, we have the option not to sit long inside a quiet moment and move on. Not to say the movie will drag - I think I trust the director enough to maintain relevance in the script - but viewers like me can appreciate the exceptional storytelling.
And at the very least, too much length is better than the more popular alternative. Most filmmakers abbreviate and intensify the story line to make the film a short, hot burst of destroyed visual literature and omit the keys to the book's original cues.

As far as I'm concerned, if it takes you nine hours to tell what is a relatively short story, you are a poor story teller.
Saying that, my opinion's probably not all that valid, because I don't really understand the appeal of watching films of something that already exists as a book.

Im sorry, I just cant view this comment as anything other than pure hipster snobbery  or maybe its just one of my pet peeves is people who always whine about how much better the book is. Well this aint the book its the movie so deal, maybe I want lazy entertainment for 90 minutes and not a 3 day project
I dont really see how the existence or non-existence of a book at all changes the entertainment value of something (at least for someone who's doesnt know much or anything about the books)
Have you read the James Bond novels Smithy? (Knowing this guy he probly has  )

I certainly agree with you, Smithy, and yet I have no problem with films based on books. I think that books should be straight to the point as well. Details are great, but if they can't be used to enforce the plot than they're a waste, in my opinion.
I think both of your arguments make sense. In a similar way, I hate films that are remade only to put in new cultural references, updated graphics that will be dusty in a few decades, and plug in hot stars of recent times who will soon be forgotten. Some book adaptations are like this. They simply try to get a wider audience or, even worse, cut out great moments or ruin them.
But then, some film adaptations are arguably better or, at least, similarly compelling in different ways. Being a visual thinker, I can appreciate how literature is painted and being a lover of music, it's always nice to hear something good amidst a favourite scene. There are more people I know who prefer the books and it can irk me if I do not find it based on valid reasoning simply because it is an argument voiced so very often.
Back to the Hobbit, however: I don't mind them not including the songs or changing them. I don't mind them cutting non-important scenes. I do mind them shamelessly plugging in nonsense to satisfy fans of the other films. The central story should be the shown. That is all. If he wants to include other Hobbity facts then he can push that into the two latter films and wrap up the actual narrative in the first. But nope. Oh well.
I think I trust the director enough to maintain relevance in the script - but viewers like me can appreciate the exceptional storytelling. Unfortunately, I cannot. Though I expect everyone to be insulting the Rankin-Bass version after this piece comes out. Such is life.

Unfortunately, I cannot. Though I expect everyone to be insulting the Rankin-Bass version after this piece comes out. Such is life.
The Rankin-Bass version was hilarious, though they cut out parts. Pretty sure I laughed through the whole film... 
I personally would rather three movies as opposed to one, crudely made film where they cut out half the exciting scenes. I believe, that though it's intending on being a scam, it's going to be worthwhile.
