I remember a topic like this before, it's probably still active and I'm just too blind to see it, but I figured I'd open this up anyway.
What piece of literature are you currently reading? Go ahead and discuss, but spoilers without warning tags are sure to get you no friends.
I'm finally reading "Fahrenheit 451". About 2 years ago I think it was Spookboy who recommended the book to me. I kept saying that I'd look into it, and finally did a few days ago. It's one of the few books I've read that hooked me right from the beginnin. The only other book I can remember doing so was "The Catcher in the Rye", and if anybody knows me, they should know that I've memorized half of that book.
The above post should be taken with 100% sarcasm. |

Huck Finn for school.
Pretty good book, but I always hate doing packets and such... Ruins the whole reading experience when you have to dissect it...

Change "Huck Finn" to "Tom Sawyer", and what you just said applies exactly to what I said while talking to my English teacher last year. I swear I used your exact words.
Granted, I'd much rather read Huck Finn than Tom Sawyer any day, no matter how good a book is it's always going to suck if you have to read it for school. Take "To Kill A Mockingbird" for example, every single person in my grade who was required to read it hates the book. Not necessarily based on the book itself (which was a let-down to me), but because we had to do responses every two chapters. I would much rather have just gotten the book at the start of the semester, and be told that we would have a book report on it as our semester final. That's the perfect mix of keeping it free for the student to read at whatever pace they want, comprehending it as they wish, and yest still making sure it is read (by making the book rep. a midterm/final).
I really don't think writing a two page letter from Scout Finch to Atticus helped me comprehend TKAM at all, but you know, maybe that's just me.
The above post should be taken with 100% sarcasm. |

For fun: "The Sirens of Titan" by Kurt Vonnegut and "Proust and the Squid" by Maryanne Wolf
For school: "The Strange Career of Jim Crow" by C. Vannwoodward and "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair
To be more accurate, the last two are the ones I should start reading now. I've read the first chapter of "Jim Crow" and its ok. It's mainly racial statistics from the pre-war South up until the end of the Civil Rights movement, and I already know most of the plot of "The Jungle" thanks to a friend who decided they should spoil it for me. I hate it when people do that, but I usually still read the book.

Fahrenheit 451 is an amazing book! It is definitely one of my favorites.
I finished The Kite Runner last week and hope to read A Thousand Splendid Suns soon. I am reading Les Miserables and a bunch of books on microwave ovens and radiation for an upcoming essay that I want to write on. I am also reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves, which is absolutely hilarious.

I read that one sometime in November and I agree! When my friends would ask me what the book was about and I said grammar, they just gave me weird looks.

Sophie's Choice, kind of for school. We have to Graduation Projects (they Satan in school board mandated form) and for my final thing I'm getting this super nice Holocaust survivor to give a presentation at my school. But there's all this stuff we have to do before the actual doing something, one of which is an 8-10 page research paper. I'm reading the book so I can use it as a source. But I've always wanted to read it anyways.
I don't mind reading books for school because I love literary analysis. But some of the stuff we have to do is really pointless. I had to read To Kill A Mockingbird last year (freshman year) and the stuff they made us do was ridiculous. Make a map of the town! That's pointless! But I'd already read the book in like 7th grade on my own, so it wasn't so bad.
That was way longer than intended.

for fun: his dark materials, the golden compass series
it only really slams the catholics (BUT THEY BROUGHT THAT ON THEMSELVES), otherwise its just stating some of the authors views on religion (thats just so far though so im not really sure0
for school: a separate peace
kinda sad really. i agree with previous posts though disecting books makes me get nothing out of them. thank god we dont read Inkheart in class because that would totally ruin that book.
(sorry i didnt mean to use caps but im too lazy to retype it)

pretty bgood, but I found it in the library, and there are no books that r my reading level that aren't about murder romance or something of that nature, it is either a book that is my reading level that is written for females, or way to easy. I like reading, but I can't get interested anymore it really isn't fun anymore

I'm reading Alcoholics Anonymous, aka the AA book, aka the Big Book. It's a very insightful read for me. Does a better job than the Narcotics Anonymous book in my opinion.

I finished reading Black, book one of The Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker, about a week ago.. We went to the library but they didnt have the other books there so we put them on hold, I'm hoping I'll be able to read Red and White before I forget how Black ended...
Ted Dekker's written a book for you.

I'm reading Mansfield Park by Jane Austen, I like her simple and elegant style but the book could be shorter. I'm also reading Cat's eye by Margaret Atwood and it would be better to say I'm memorizing it,I read it hundred times at least, I love it!!! My favourite author ofcours.
