Does anyone know any good free or cheap legal music sites that you can download from?
Thanks in advance

I download my songs off of Limewire. As long as you don't share your music files, you're fine.

Limewire is still illegal if you're downloading songs somebody else is "sharing". It's just a common misconception that it's only illegal if YOU share the music, or if you sell the music you download for profit.

I've stopped my evil illegally downloading recently. Don't really know why, maybe I'm scared of having to pay ~$500 per illegally downloaded song if I'm caught... It'd be roughly a million dollar fine. Just not ready for that at this point in my life IMO.

There is a site called Legal Sounds with incredibly cheap downloads ($1 albums, $0.10 songs) but I'm still trying to figure out the catch. All the songs are DRM free (which, in the easiest way to explain, means you can use them in any media player). You have to start off with $25, which will get you roughly 250 songs. They also have a pretty nice catalog.

I DL'd their download client, but haven't done anything. Upon registering you get 1 free song from some top 20 list or something (modern rock/rap take up the entire list). It's easily the cheapest site on the web, and "legal'... I guess.

The above post should be taken with 100% sarcasm.

Actually Swaff, it all depends on the law of the country in which you live. In the US, it's illegal to download AND upload, but in Canada it isn't. There, it's the uploader's responsibility to be legal with their files, and a person can download freely without breaking the law. Some of the other countries (like Switzerland) even have MUCH more relaxed laws, and it's quite legal to download things from there...

So, depending on your country, Limewire might very way be a legal way for you to download songs for free off the internet. Of course, the opposite case is also true, and it might very well be illegal for you as well! If you're not certain of the legal status of your country, then be certain to check before you get into trouble with illegal activites!!

I figured out the catch. I checked the site on McAfee Site Advisor and someone said
You probably won't have any security problems with the site, but you ARE downloading illegal music. You may as well get a p2p program and do that for free. As birdbrain says, its in Russia, so there is no way for the US Government to regulate or shut it down. Don't use this site, use a P2P, or iTunes.

I'm too lazy to verify the comment, but it sounds reasonable and legit.

He who does, has done.

Ahh, didn't even think about laws in other countries. I can understand that now. And here I was thinking USA policed the world.

Yeah, I knew legalsounds seemed too good to be true. I knew the site was based in Russia, and that made me skeptical from the get-go. I bet it's perfectly legal in Russia (going back to Steve's comment), and maybe with their wording they made it sound as if it was legal everywhere. So even if a company is based in another country (where it's legal), as long as I'm a US citizen (or, "purchasing" it in this country) it's still technically illegal. Then the reverse goes along with Limewire and other countries.

Pfft. Trent Reznor (NIN) released his newest album (The Slip) for free download, and personally set his previous work (Ghosts I-IV) out on torrent websites (I ended up purchasing it anyway. 36 tracks for $5). Radiohead also released "In Rainbows" for whatever price you felt like paying at first. Why can't all artists just do the same?

You could always just use a sound recorder and record songs off of Youtube. It'll all be pretty bad quality though, also make sure you have it set up for stereo sound ("high quality"), otherwise it's all mono. That's still probably illegal, as you are literally "stealing" the music, but it's not really traceable.

Actually, just stick with iTunes. I'm like 90% sure that's legal.

iTunes is legal, but I think it's way too expensive. Yes, Limewire is considered illegal, but I think it depends on how you use it. I just download songs, I don't sell them, share them, or anything else to them.

My friend told me about downloads.nl. Does anyone know about this? (I've tried downloading two or three songs, but I'm not sure about the legality of it...)

As for recording Youtube videos, vixy.net can convert videos for you. The only problem is that sometimes the sound file ends up with ~20 extra minutes of nothing (I think the song might loop, actually, but I've never checked), so you'd have to use an editing program to cut the extra time off.

Also, if you already have a music video, or a song in other formats, Media Convert can, like its name says, convert the media. It doesn't support ripping off of Youtube, though.

Not all artists have the pre-existing fan base and recognition to make such an approach viable. We can dream, though.

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to buy the CD or vinyl. I think that's legal in most countries.

I like CDs for the album art and insert, but they're pretty expensive and not all stores sell the ones I'm looking for.

I usually buy one Cd and tell my friends i will burn them a copy if they burn me a copy of a cd they have, i do that with multiple friends until i have a collection, Its pretty cool because you start off with one cd and end up with a decent amount, But for the most part its best to buy the album. Thats what i have been doing lately i dont feel right getting songs for free knowing that the artist make a living off there music

I've been tring to reach you. but your extension cord doesnt reach that far

I use itunes mostly. I don't deal with those illegal websites and stuff. I'm afraid they are quite sketchy anyway. I still buy a few CD's if I really like the artist but most of the time, I just buy the songs I like on itunes. That way, I'm not paying for the ones I don't like. I listen to it on youtube for awhile before deciding to actually buy it. I'm so cheap.

Actually no not at all, it is illegal to download here as well. Your not as likely to get into as much trouble here though, but it still is illegal. Also you can get viruses downloading music from limewire, it has happened to me before, some files connect to a web site to download a codec, which is probably a virus. If a .mp3 file connects to the internet, don't download the program.

You can use audacity to record audio files from Youtube or you can get programs that download the audio track for you. Which I think is legal.

I like to buy the CD because of cover art, and bonus features.

I just listen to them on YouTube, record it as it's playing with Audacity, and save. 100% free, and probably legal.

I just go to www.projectplaylist.com. It's a really good site. It has nearly every song ever created....

Just a guess, I would think that that isn't exactyl legal... But untraceable I'm sure.

This is a bit silly but you can put audacity on your USB drive. Go to your neighbors place, and download songs there. If you get caught there, you won't get in trouble.

I think using Audacity is almost legal, I'm not certain though, but it is free and untraceable.

It's not legal, it's evil

That's why I do it. But instead I use this or this

Then I use Audacity to edit it (increase volume or cut it if it over did it)

Sort of on the same page as this... kinda...

My old computer crashed (old age, mainly) and I just got a new one. Luckily, most of my music is on my iPod, as well as a few photos.

iTunes doesn't let you upload anything from an iPod into iTunes, because of DRM and what not. I've had to use a program before (when my Harddrive crashed about a year ago), and I'm planning on doing the same thing now.

Thing is, I don't remember what I used. If anybody has a idea on a good (free) program, give me a link. I'm pretty sure it's illegal, going against the user agreement in iTunes or something, but I'm not losing all my music. I'd rather use dial-up than not have my music.
