Today is the seventh, the eigth for me (I'm in China), and the Olypics will be opening tonight at 8PM (which is around 8AM for America). Who is actually going to wake up at 8AM to see the opening cermony? I actaully get to go, which is very lucky as they've become around $2,000 for one ticket. So I'll post some pictures once I get back to America. So, let's just talk about the Olympics.

I wake up at 5:30 AM, so.. yeah.. 8's no problem.
Probably wont watch much of the Olympics though, never really get into it.
The above post should be taken with 100% sarcasm. |

I watched the Prime Time rebroadcast - 8pm to midnight. It was an impressive show on TV, I can't imagine how it must have looked in person!
I knew the fireworks would be awesome - after all, it's China, they invented them! But the big LCD screen on the field and the screens all around the top of the stadium - wow.
I only know one person who is in China right now, and he didn't go there for the Olympics specifically, but maybe he caught the fireworks at least - I imagine they were seen for miles around.

My favorite part was when all those blocks with chinese characters on them pooped up in down in those cool patterns. I can't beleive there were actually people inside each blcok controlling them! Plus, when I saw the fireworks on TV, I tried to look out the window to see them, but we were facing the wrong direction. DARN!

I loved the part where they were all beating on those drums that lit up. It was so cool! And they made all those numbers with the drums

I too am watching the prime time rebroadcast. Last night's official opening of the games was absolutely breathtaking on TV. I can only imagine how spectacular it must have been in person. The extreme grandeur is to the extreme.
Too bad it had to be marred by tragedy with the killing of the volleyball coach's father-in-law. Usually I never watch the volleyball games, but out of respect for the coach and his family I decided to stay up tonight and watch the USA's first night of volleyball. So far we are ahead, playing Venezuela. Doesn't mean we will win, but . . .
I have one question though. When was the last time a US president attended the Olympic Games? Anybody know? Putin and Bush sitting so close to each other was kind of scary, considering it was just a meeting of the best athletes in the world although Bush seemed to want to play on the girls team earlier.
Michael Phelps did himself and his mom and his country up proud tonight. Hope he can become a 7 medal winner in this Olympics. I do remember watching Mark Spitz in Munich win all of his gold medals. What a thrill that was too.
DINO! So he's new! But come join his WTB game as a crimesolver in each state. Sounds like a great series starting with Alabama. See you there. |

I know. That was the most amazing thing I've ever seen! I was in bed though, so I saw the replay in the morning and heard about it from my dad. That was so amazing!

I had already gone to bed - dh woke me up to tell me the results of the relay.
I was amazed to learn that there is a woman aged 33 competing in gymnastics... a year younger than me! But she's tiny and her story of how she got there was touching.

I saw the relay win too. It was awesome!
And vlerma, I heard that this is the first time that a President who is still in office went to the Olympics. Doesn't he have more important things to do, like run the country?

I love the Olympics and these have definitely not disappointed.
The Opening Ceremony was definitely amazing, just on my tv. I can't imagine how awesome it would be in person.
My favorite moment so far was the 200m Freestyle Relay win! Mom and I cheered so much at the end, the cat ran out of the room! haha The best thing was Michael Phelps' face when he was looking at the board to see if we won. Priceless! That shows the French to trash talk... I don't think I'd talk that big with Michael anywhere near the pool.
Buah seems to be having a great time. I guess it may be a good thing to do a little international "bonding" since most hate him. At least he managed to clap for Iraq in the Opening Ceremony.

I'm glad Bush went. It sent a message that he was not above such gatherings, which I think other presidents have done in not going. I also hope that his visit to the "official" Christian church in China makes him more aware of the censorship that church is required to do, and how the illegal house church movement is growing despite persecution. It also gave him a chance to talk with Putin face-to-face and maybe get a better handle on what's going on in Georgia...
But that's all political. This is about the athletes, right?

I think that the scoring is very bias against the Americans. I started noticing this in the diving section. The Chinese would do a dive... score well. The Americans would do a dive basically the exact same way, and get a sufficient amount lower! I decided to test my theory out, and watch diving the next day, and sure enough it happened again, when they should have gotten better marks.
There was also an interview with an old coach for divers, and he even thinks the voting is bias.

Also the girls gymnastics were a little bias as well. I mean they got a silver, but whenever China, and U.S.A. basically did the same type of routine China got the better score. That's why I like swimming. U.S.A is really good at it, and you can't be bias about who wins. How are you going to say he didn't win when the U.S.A. swimmer finished first. They have a touch sensor box under the water so it stops the clock when any type of pressure is applied against it. As proven it will only stop by someone touching it, not the water.
For the most part Cam, I agree with you. I think the Chinese athletes have a little bit of an advantage because the judges are from China, and they're hosting it in Beijing, China.

The system in gymnastics is proving to not be the improvement they had hoped for. While the reduction of having three gymnasts compete for each team instead of all six saves time, it's hard to think of the team as a team rather than individuals who are good at certain apparatus. Having more difficult routines begin with higher base scores is good, but the deductions don't seem to be given equal weight from judge to judge.
But I won't begrudge the Chinese women their first gold medal for team gymnastics. The home team always has the adrenaline advantage.

The USA did make a lot of mistakes which contributed to them not getting the gold.
