So what do you think? Is marching band a sport?
Why or why not?

Swaff, I have to disagree. Kids in marching band are out there, pretty much everyday during the week, for at least an hour. On friday nights, they have to go to the football games to perform their show, which can be pretty tedious. And from the football games, which they don't get released from until about midnight, then they have to get up at 5 for a contest the next day. I think marching band is a sport. They practice as much, maybe even harder than normal sports, so why wouldn't they get recognition for it?
I miss all the little things, I never thought that they'd mean this much to me, but yeah, I miss you. |

Sport definition: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
The last time I saw my hometown marching band it was half time of the football game and there was only one band out there, no competition.
If it is a sport, what are the rules and how do you keep score?
It's not what you know, it's what people think you know. |

There are several competitions that bands go to. They get scored on their colorguard, winds, and percussion. You have rules how long you get on and off the field, and requirements. It's just as well a sport.

It's a great activity that requires practice and time, yes. Is it hard? Sure. Is it physically demanding? It can be. Is there competition? Yeah.
By the broadest definition of 'sport' - a physical activity that involves competition - yeah, it could qualify.
But let's be real... they are musicians, not athletes. The skills they need to be a good band are primarily musical, not athletic.

I'm in marching band.
There is a very distinct difference between a time consuming activity and a sport.
I'm pretty sure the starting time for 95% of highschool football games is 7 pm. If the game lasts 5 hours (to have the band released at midnight) there is something going wrong. Granted, I don't have to do our halftime show (because I play football), but I still have to practice and what-not. All throughout the summer we had little mini-camps to work on marching fundamentals and our playing. It sucked. But that doesn't make it a sport.
We have a competition this Wednesday, that still doesn't make it a sport.
Sure school bands need more recognition, but falsely calling them a "sport" isn't what needs to be done...

I am in a marching and it is a physical sport, and we have competitions where we go against the oter bands. According to the definition of sport, that means that marching band is a sport.

I've competed in debate and forensics, are those sports as well?
Competition =/= sport
Physical activity =/= sport
Band =/= sport.
I agree a hundred percent that marching band is a time consuming and sometimes physically demanding activity. However, calling it a sport is just preposterous.
