Before people get on my case...
Chess is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee, and international chess competition is sanctioned by the FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation). There are also many chess variants that have different rules, different pieces, and different boards.
It is a sport.
Anyway, lately I've been having a chess craving, so I thought it might be cool if we discussed chess, strategies, setup matches, and posted some chess puzzles here for eachother to solve.
One of my favourite opening moves is (assuming white)
E2-E4 - often the opponent mimics this E7-E5
D1-H5 -typically at this point the opponent tries to attack with pawn to G6
H5-E5 - Check your king
E5-H8 - Take my free rook
That works usually against inexperienced people, or people who aren't paying attention. But you'll have their complete attention after it.
Anyway, here is a chess puzzle:

This one is easy. You're white, and it's 2 moves to checkmate. The point of chess puzzles is to constantly keep your opponents in check and/or force their next move. In other words, you have to assume that your opponent plays a perfect defense.

Here's my answer (in white)
H1-H7
Black responds with king to h7
White queen to h5

I had my chess phase, though for the record, not that I care thats its in this forum. I will never ever consider it a sport and dont waste your breath trying to explain it to me (the Olympic Committe is not a dictionary and I believe are removing chess from olympic consideration or whatever).
Anway, yeah the best response to
1. e4 e5
2. Qh5
is
2 ...Nc6 protecting the e pawn
your then gonna see
3. Bc4 g6
4. Qf3 Nf6
which isnt bad for black

Great idea Harry. I'm not going to get into the sport discussion, (it's not one, in my opinion). And please forgive my lack of chess notation knowledge, I hope I'm doing it correctly.
Qxg6
EDIT: original move reposted.

The problem with that move would be that Black could then move pawn to H6. While that would leave their knight unprotected, you wouldn't be able to eat it with your queen unless you sacrifice the rook under attack as spid pointed out. There's no defense against rolu's solution.
Here's another 2-move checkmate:

Here's a tougher one - 3 move checkmate (Or 2 move, if the King makes an error):

That actually loses the rook and the knight as white will have to interpose the knight to stop checkmate. Anyway as for these two
Kc2 Ka2
Qa4#
For the mate in three
Ne8+ Kf8 (h8 or g8 lead to the same mate on g7)
Nf6+ Ke7
Re8#

Well the king has three posible sqaures to move to and it will be mate in three no matter if he moves to f8, g8, or h8 (I dont see Harry's mate in 2) the pattern is the same for the final move it just can happen on two different squares

I get it now, for both 2 and three moves.
2 if the king moves back to g7 instead of e7.

This is the 1st time I've wandered in to this topic. I was pleasantly surprised to see Chess. Only on Braingle! And the International Olympic Committee.
