I'm sure y'all have been hearing about this bug.
WHO has raised the World warning level too... very ominous. but they haven't yet raised it to Pandemic but still the infected count in Mexico is estimated at 2000, with the death toll at 149.
I was wondering if anyone else is hearing local news that I'm not?
I get the local stuff from DFW on yahoo, via zip code, in addition to the general stuff.
Fort Worth, Dallas, and Richardson have been in the news...
reported, at least one confirmed, some schools shutting down for stem to stern scrubbing.
Kid had a headache at dinner, and chose to go to bed and only took a couple bites of soup/bread.
So now of course I'm worried sick... and THEN I found the news about DFW's latest... OCH!
Anywho, if anyone feels like sharing their local news (and any accompaning paraoia) feel free.

I realize this is considered serious, but I'm honestly just blowing it off as nothing. It's the same thing like SARS, bird flu, Anthrax... I'm not taking this seriously.

A 9 year old boy tested positive for the Swine flu here, in Ohio, but not the deadly kind. He's sick . . . was in Mexico with his family recently, but he will be ok. I hadn't realized there were different versions of this flue. . . . "I", have been feeling ill. . . . stomach virus going around. Sunday, I get fevered. Fever does not go along with this stomach virus that we've been dealing with, so it was very odd for me to have a temp, then have it break in the night, and now . . . . . I'm ok?! So weird. Not the flue, I'm not worried about that. . . .. it was just so weird. I haven't had a fever in years!

Its no where near me!
I live in the sun-shine state and it's in like...Texas, New York, and California.
Even if I was in the middle of it I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Here in the land of 10'000 lakes, it's been all over the newspaper and TV. What to do if it arrives here. Are we ready? Closing schools for cleaning, etc. But, there have been no reported cases in the five state area. Like snowy said there are different strains out there. I'll have to agree with the majority of posters and say I'm not too concerned at this time.

I must admit I'm a little nervous about this bug. The last time I had the flu (before I started getting flu shots) I was very sick, so much so I wanted to die and I vowed I'd never allow myself to get it again. That was 8 years ago. I've been lucky since then, so yes I'm keeping my eyes and ears on the network news regarding it. So far nothing reported in WNY, but if (and probably when) it reaches here, I will be one of the first in line for the Tamiflu shot. I know it's not the answer, but it is supposed to help.

I am kind of freaking out about it. Even though there's been like 2 cases in the UK. I get scared easily, idk.
The strain in Mexico was worse than the strains in other countries right? The US and such only have mild strains of the virus?

So far, but no one knows WHY! If it's the same strain, then it should behave pretty much the same. So, that makes one wonder if they're aren't two+ strains. Each strand is capable of mutation to make it easier or harder to kill, so multiply that by how many strands are out there... ouch.
Also, because the strains here aren't too bad we could be overlooking a good number of people who just think they have the regular flu.... frightening.

There has to be more than one strain in Mexico, because the boy in Ohio who has the milder strain. . . was in Mexico. This is all very interesting, and I will admit, once I hear of someone in the U.S. having the deadly strain, I will get pretty jumpy. With a child who is diabetic and asthmatic, he would have a very hard time fighting it off, deadly strain or milder. . . either one would hurt him severely.

It's kinda scary...I'm just hoping it doesn't spread to western NY because it's the last thing I want to be sick with.
I hear it's the flu is made up of bird, pig, and human flu all together....it really doesn't sound fun

Has anyone considered that it's smoke and mirrors?
Granted , people dieing in Mexico from it is something to worry about. However they have nationalized health care. Here, so far, no one has died and the reported cases are being cured. People die from the flu by the thousands each year. Yes, this flu is something new, but it is not something to panic about yet. If it was, wouldn't we already have the borders to Mexico shut down?Oh..never mind, they need to get here for health care. Ironic that Barock Copperfield, is using this "pandemic" as a way to distract us while he nationalizes our own health care system.

I live in a border town, and at school today, a bunch of kids were wearing masks. The ER at a local hospital is flooded with people thinking they have the swine flu. In a town about six miles from mine, 2 reported cases of swine flu have been reported, subsequently closing down their school district. I agree with Hummingbird not to panic. The best way to avoid the flu is how you would avoid any other flu: wash your hands, use tissue, etc. I think the main reason why the deaths are localized in Mexico so far is because they didn't have access to proper health care. However, I'm still slightly concerned.

What's bad is that now they're saying it's spread person to person...
Meaning sharing a water fountain or a doorknob can pass it along.
A face mask isn't going to do you a whole heck of a lot of good.
Except maybe to keep the germs crammed right up there against your orifices.
Richardson (and others) are closing and cleaning... but I wonder what they're using.
Bleach is the ONLY cleaner that will kill a virus, which this and all flus are.
If they're using Lysol, Anti-bacterial, etc it won't do squat against it.
I really hope they know that... if they checked with the CDC they should...
Bugger is that you can use bleach on floors, desks etc, but not on carpets so that could be a mess.

We do have a right to be concerned. You especially should be a bit more concerned since it has been confirmed so close. I didn't mean to sound dismissive of the whole thing. I just think there is a lot more to the media attention being given to it than that they just want to inform us. I think it is being used as a distraction from other things that will impact all of America for many years to come.

Lol seriously? Of course people have considered this. I'm pretty sure everyone rationally knows we shouldn't be worrying too much at the moment. People may have only died in Mexico because of poor health care and the fact that they weren't prepared. Still it's normal for people to freak out when the media is talking about it becoming a pandemic.
Yes flu kills thousands per year but this is different. For one, the people who have died in Mexico were mostly healthy and young, in their 20s-40s which indicates that it's a whole new virus causing the immune system to overreact. Also, it's believed that this strain is similar to the one that mutated into the Spanish flu which killed 50 million people.
I understand why some people are dismissing this as no big deal. But that's just gonna lead to further spread of a potential pandemic.

Well, if it gets parents/kids washing their hands more than it'll prevent all sorts of things spreading, so I'm not upset by the drama. Now... if they were trying to sell a Miracle Cure... for ONLY four payments of 99.95 then I'd be upset, but for now increased cleanliness isn't going to hurt.
I don't even want to know what all cooties are floating around my kids school even as we speak...
TB, Norovirus, E coli, Salmonella, The Flu, Common Cold, Bird Flu, Giardiasis... *shudder*
And those are just the ones you get by holding hands... don't get me started on the stats for the other kind.
In case anyone is curious... as of 11am The CDC knows about these cases...

People are going to get sick with this. No doubt. But really, not many are going to die. Mexico- the deaths are like 36, right? Now, turn that into a fraction with a denominator of the combined population of Mexico and the rest of the world.

If it was such a big deal, and our president really cared about the US, don't you think he would be out there securing the southern border? Since there is nothing going on by Homeland Security, or the President to stop anyone traveling legally or illegally from Mexico, apparently the Swine Flu must not be any big deal.
