Way to think about others first, Steph.

On another note, I was looking at an article title on yahoo or something that read "Swine Flu gets a new name from the WHO" and thinking to myself, I didn't know The Who had a song called "Swine Flu". Seriously, I thought that.

I imagine you (and your family) wouldn't be the only one's upset by a Grad Delay.

Just one more example of... is it collateral damage? that this bug is causing/can cause.

I gave the kids a big lecture on washing their hands, every chance they get.
Even if it just means sloughing them off in the water fountain!

I doubt they actually did that, they'd get a mark for it, but still I got the point across.

My kids don't get sick very often, I blame the spinach, but I really hate it when they do.
I hate seeing them hurt, but also feels like a failure to protect them, if that makes sense?

So, I'm really hoping this passes us by...

... I wonder if Kroger sells Lintel Lamb's Blood...?

Most of the school districts around mine are closing. It's getting pretty scary. Everyone is applying hand sanitizer like every other second. It's insane how fast this is spreading.

Here's the latest bulletin from Tarrant County...

To date there are 5 confirmed cases and 15 probable cases of H1N1 (swine) flu. No
hospitalizations or deaths have been reported. All cases are recovering well.

Confirmed Case Information:
• 2 locations: Euless (2 confirmed cases), Fort Worth (3 confirmed cases)
• Age range: 11 months to 37 years
• Onset of illness dates range from: 04/20/09 through 04/26/09
• 1 school with confirmed case (FWISD – McLean Middle School)
• None have travel history to Mexico
• 2 confirmed cases are mother and son

Probable Case Information:
• 2 locations: Euless (1 probable case), Fort Worth (9 probable cases)
• 5 probable cases still under investigation
• Age range: 2 years to 34 years
• Onset of Illness dates range from: 04/22/09 through 04/27/09
• 4 schools with probable cases (all in FWISD)
o 3 probable cases at South Hill Elementary
o 1 probable case at Westcliff Elementary
o 2 probable cases at McLean Middle School
o 1 probable case at McLean 6th Grade Center
• 1 probable case with travel history to Mexico

Map You'll see Arlington in the center... Ft Worth to our left.. Euless to the North...

I'ma go check Dallas County... see what they've got....

Linkage

In Dallas County, four new cases were confirmed Thursday for a total of seven, and the Dallas Independent School District closed its first school because of the health crisis. Tarrant County had four new cases for a total of five.

Colin and Denton County have cases too... so it's ALL around us...
But so far no cases mentioned in Arlington.

I know the donut protects against the worst weather, didn't know it worked on flu.

Seems they donno which is the right way... Link

Ft Worth shut down the whole enchilada with one confirmed case.
Dallas only shut down the effected school with one confirmed case.

Is one overreacting? Is one under-reacting?

Maybe Ft Worth was going overboard. 7 days is a lot of class time lost. But I'm with Froggy though, in Dallas I think the least they should have done is shut down and clean the Elem/Middle/High CLUSTER where the illness popped up. Because if that kiddo has it then he/she could have given it to sisters/brothers or neighbors... who range in age from K-12 within the district's school borders...

Edit again... Projections

Two groups have run simulations and whatnot... one predicts total cases in the coming weeks at 1900 country wide, another says 1700... stating also that the majority of cases will probably be in Cali, Texas & Florida. A couple quotes...

"Remember - that's exponential growth, which means slow at the beginning and then very fast," Brockmann said. "If you run the worst-case scenario for four months, we're at a very different number."

Brockmann says his forecast is off by a little bit, and that's a good thing. His worst-case scenario assumes that no measures have been taken by officials and public health agencies to combat the spread of disease. Most likely, the case count will be lower than his estimate as a result of such things as stronger public health campaigns for hand washing and social distancing (stand far away from people who are coughing and sneezing), school closures where children are found to be symptomatic and the federal travel advisory against non-essential trips to Mexico.

So, out of the 304,059,724 (as of Jul 200 census counted people in America only 1900 will supposedly catch this.

That's the good news... bad news is that my state will be one of the hardest hit...

I am in New Zealand.
And 6 students came back from Mexico and they were reported to have Swine Flu! All six are in quarantine!!
So it's in NZ
But to be honest, I don't think I'll catch it, or anyone within 100 miles of my home...
But it's kinda scary that 6 students are in quarantine in NZ!!!

Yup, I checked the Health Dept site at about two and there was a bulletin that Birdville ISD was shut down.

Well, at least they caught them... not like here where people've been bringing in and out of the airports...

Sucks that they're stuck in quarantine, but compared to the mess we're in I'd have to envy your government's sense.

There's a case in Richardson, which is a town pretty close to me!
My principal imposed a rule saying that when you wash your hands, you have to sing the ABC"s to yourself twice. And this happened on the day of the Science TAKS,(Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills), so of course everybody needed to take the pressure off a bit, and as a result, there were huge lines at the sinks.
Rather funny........
But I think its not such a big cause of worry here in the states, because we seem to have the "milder strain", right? Yet, where I am, it does pose a bit of threat. However, that's only in the infected states.

They're talking about closing down the schools, if even one person gets sick! Everybody in my class has divided opinions about swine flu. I tend to take the side of "Not that that threatening, but a cause of worry." There's been huge debates that do not really feel it's my place to take part in.

They also reported a case in Florida...I'm still not scared...

The only person to die from this wasn't in a healthy condition in the first place, and the swine flu is no different then the regular flu we go through every winter...

Yeah, but we get the flu shot to avoid being ill.

The flu is NOT fun... I'm sure we've all had an experience.
And if one person in the house gets it you have decent odds that others will.

And that means missed school, missed work, etc.

Assuming of course that you're responsible and don't go in anyways knowing you're sick.

Ahem... that's why this is spreading... "just a mild cold"... and now Bob's got it....
No sitter? Gotta work? Then kids gotta go to school... bingo, the school's contaminated.

That's why they're closing schools.
To lower the number that get it because they aren't at a school that's been contaminated.
They're responsible for that school being a clean and safe place to study.
If kids start getting ill, when they've been warned... they could be in for a mongo mad mob suing.
School districts cannot afford that, so some are taking preventative measures.

I've never had a flu shot, the only person I even know who had a flu shot was my grandparents, but the rheumatoid arthritis it deletes their ammune system. So if they got the flu they couldn't fight it (much like the kid who died from it).

I have had the flu 2-3 times in my short life time, and I'll agree, no, it's not fun. But it's something that happens, neither of my brothers have had it. My mom and dad have both had it once, and neither was caused by me. So I don't agree with the whole (your family is sure to get it too) we never had "You are not allowed to be in the same room at the same time as him!" or my mom running aroudn with Lysol...yet my family never got sick. Me and both my brothers were homeschooled, my mom was a stay at home mom, so we were in a small house together with each other 24/7.

Who doesn't love a couple days from school? Even if the only way I got out of a few days of school was being sick I would take it! I could battle the sickness for a few days, get a TON of rest, and a TON of drink. So it's pretty awesome, it sucks for a few days, but after that your over it. Getting sick is not something I try to get, but if I get it I don't freak out and run to the hospital first thing.

I'm not that scared. Well kinda.. my parents are like freaking out about it.. because Texas is close to Mexico.. Schools in Texas are starting to shut down. There was one reported death Houston, Texas because that guy visited Mexico. I live near Houston, so the radios and TVs are booming about the latest cases of the Swine Flu. I hope this all gets over soon. The sooner the better. I pray every night

Actually, coming back from the grocery, at the light nearest our house (as in about 1 minute walk) was an SUV from Chihuahua. I'm thinking... well isn't that nice... they deliver right to your door.

Latest Tarrant County Info
Yesterday Swine Flu was just a link on the right hand side... now it's front and center when you go to their site.

Not exactly comforting... 2 confirmed in Euless, 3 confirmed in Ft Worth...
73 samples (for the region including Tarrant) sent in, 14 confirmed, with 59 samples waiting for testing.
That means 0 of the 14 suspected cases that've been tested so far came up negative...
That right there does not bode well for the other 59 still waiting.

And our District's website now says...

Special Notice:

H1N1 Update

The AISD has been notified by the Tarrant County Public Health office about one probable case of H1N1 (swine flu) reported at Knox Elementary. There are currently no confirmed cases in the AISD. The district will continue to work closely with the city's office of emergency management and local health officials to monitor the situation. At this time, there are no plans to close any AISD campus or facility.

I find it bizarre that TC found out before AISD. If these people had a sick kid that stayed home they are supposed to call the school and let them know. If the child left school early, ill, the nurse would know. And if either of those had happened I think the principal at Knox would have let AISD know ASAP. Yet AISD was notified by TC. That's scary... wonder if it means parents aren't coming forward and admitting it when they've got it... (grab your torch and pitchforks!) so instead they let the kid attend school.... I really hope this one turns out to be a fluke...

I agree, the flu usually isn't too bad, for most folks, but kids missing school is not good.
Not good for them, with EOY exams coming, and not good for parents that have to stay home to care for them.
OR find a sitter so they can go to work.

Oh someone in Liverpool got it. Half hour away from me. That sucks. I'm still silently freaking out.

Closing schools but not even closing the southern border temporarily, makes no sense. The reason being given is that the "horse is already out of the barn so go ahead and let the whole herd out?"
If I discover a bee hive because two fly in my open window, I'm closing the window.
All cases of the Swine flu, as far as I know can be traced to Mexico, if not Mexico City. We've had one death in the US and that poor baby was visiting from Mexico City, and from things I've read, he wasn't healthy to begin with. He crossed the border on Apr. 4. became ill Apr. 8 and went into a Brownsville hospital. Then was transported to Houstin where he later died.
So far all deaths are in Mexico. We should do all we can to get health care to Mexico, while protecting the US. At this time in history we still have the best health care in the world, such as it is.
I still think it's a bunch of hooey. 3500 die yearly from other flu bugs. This bug isn't even killing in the double digits yet. In my opinion it wouldn't be killing at all if Mexico had better health care.
Instead, we are suffering economically, academically, emotionally etc. so our government can come rescue us from the dreaded swine flu. By spendig almost another 2 billion they are gaining even more power over our lives. Hec, they've managed to close schools, businesses, festivals, sporting events, etc. all because 1 person died on US soil from Swine Flu. Yet they refuse to limit travel between the US and Mexico and refuse to do anything about all the murders on both sides of the border. I feel sorry for the toddler from Mexico who died of the dreaded swine flu, but people of all ages are killed, raped, kiddnapped every day on the border, and our administration turns a blind eye. Sorry, but I find it hard to get upset about a flu bug that hasn't been proven to be any more dangerous than a common flu.
Wash your hands! That's all the government and main stream media is going to tell you. Like we are all so stupid we don't know to do that anyway. When this flu passes without becoming something horrible, this administration will take credit for it not becoming a full blown pandemic because they told us to wash our hands.

There were some cases reported within 100 miles of my home. They closed the schools there, and the cancelled prom.(Which I don't care about, but I'm sure some people are mad). I'm not to worried, but people tend to panic.

I hear you, hummingbird. Don't get me started on that one... We all know fear is a good way to control people.

They closed a neighboring school system here in SE MI today because a 16 year caught swine flu from a classmate who went to Mexico over spring break. And what do teens do when they have no school? Hang with their friends! They'll be in the malls and theaters and each other's homes.

I saw panic Saturday when a couple came to visit one of our patients, who just happened to be in isolation (big sign on door and isolation cart next to it) for something else. When they came to the nurses' station, they were visibly alarmed and equally relieved to hear the truth.

Two kids at my school have it.
I'm not worried though because I haven't been sick since I was very little.
I might not have been sick even then.
I don't know, it's not like I remember.
Well I've never had the normal flu, so I don't think I'll be getting this one.

I'm not worried about it and I live in new york city. Even if i did catch it, I know i'd be okay. There was what, one death in the united states? And it was a baby who wasn't healthy anyway. In my opinion people are freaking out for next to no reason. The regular flu kills too. But most people aren't worried about that.
