What I don't get is that supposedly everyone is afraid of the swine flu, but in my school only the girl who's always worried about crocodiles in the bathroom is worried. All this hype is worthless. Never ever gonna get the swine flu vaccine, never.

Of all the times I could have gotten it, it had to be at the beggening of a 4 day weekend. I couldnt trick or treat, and I wont be able to go to my churches bon fire which I have been waiting a long time for. I cant really do much because of it. It really stinks.

Oh, that sucks! The best time to get sick is on a Monday where you have a test you forgot to study for. Hope you get better.

Why are so many people (posts above) deciding NOT TO GET the Swine Flu vaccine? Everything I've seen and read has said that it's harmless and we should get it. I don't see any reason to not get it. Not to say that whatever the reason, it may not be true, so that's why I'm asking... what have you heard that made you not want to get it?

I'm not getting the Swine Flu vaccine, either.
I don't even get regular seasonal flu shots.
Mostly, I think, because in general, I don't really like vaccines for brief and minor illnesses.

My justification for not getting it is that I don't ever get sick.
I've had the regular flu once in my life, 11 years ago, and I was sick with it for a total of 5 days.
I've only gotten a flu shot once, 5 years ago, so theoretically I should be susceptible to getting sick. But I still haven't, even living in college dorms for the last three months.
My roommate had the flu a couple weeks ago, and one of my neighbors actually had Swine Flu.
But I'm still healthy and well, so I see no need to get the vaccinations.

Swine Flu is no worse than regular flu, it's just getting a lot more attention right now because it's still new.
In my home town a couple weeks ago, a little girl died from Swine Flu, and that just renewed everybody's worry.

But, really, little kids, and old people, and everybody in between, die from regular flu every year still.
People just don't notice as much because it's been happening for a long time.

And any vaccine has the risk of side effects or reactions, and if it's a short-lived illness that's not going to completely disrupt the pattern of my life, I'm not going to bother with it.
Maybe just because I don't actually think that Swine Flu is as big of a deal as it was originally portrayed.
I also think my overconfidence in my immune system is contributing a little bit, as well as the possibility that my mom gets really paranoid about all new medical advances and has always tried to avoid getting me shots when they were necessary.
When I was little, when a new shot was released, my mom would wait at least a year before we got them to make sure that there weren't any horrible side effects to someone else who got it.

I think that was a little unnecessary, but then again, she also believes that autism is caused by vaccinations, so I guess her paranoia makes sense.

But now that I finally get to be able to make my own medical decisions, if it's a vaccine for a temporary and minor illness, I'm not going to get it.

The one time I DID get a flu shot was the year my mom had cancer.
It was the year when quantities were in REALLY low supply, and they were only giving the shot to young children and the elderly, and anyone who was at risk for getting the flu.
None of us were at risk, but because of my mom's chemotherapy, her immune system was pretty much dead, so my whole family was given the shot.
If it had been for my own safety, I wouldn't've gotten it. But because it was for her health, and because I was only 14 at the time and didn't get a say in the matter, I got the shot.

I had a mild reaction to the shot, but nothing that would convince me to never get it again, if I felt it was something that would actually be beneficial to me.
But as far as I can tell, that first time will also be the last time I ever get a flu shot. I just don't see the point.

That was very interesting! If you've only had the flu once and you're never sick, I'd say you're probably fine! I don't know anything about it, for real, and who does? All we know is what we're told, unless we do research like reading medical studies and we know how to interpret the results...

I'm in a very high-risk category, and I've always got a regular flu shot, but this year somehow my doc forgot and I forgot, so I have to get on that. I know I need to get at least the regular flu shot.

Idk about the other stuff, so I'm not going to manufacture an opinion. I do think autism is being diagnosed WAY more than it was twenty years ago, so it's hard to know. But, since I was a kid, we got shots at school, yep, every year we lined up in the morning, marched to the cafeteria, and one by one had the whatevah vaccination. I'm not autistic, and no one I know from then is, although that doesn't mean much, but, I am sure it's being vastly more diagnosed... whether those diagnoses are true or not.

I had stomach flu once when it was going around, and I lay in bed for three days, feeling like I had been kicked in the stomach over and over... it was AWFUL! I wasn't mauseous, but my stomach was like one big cramp, and I didn't even know about "whatevah-its-called" that can really help with that at the time!

One should NEVER be too complacent about their health.

I was the healthiest person on earth - never had a sick day in my life...got over the flu after one day, never had flu shots, always SOOOO healthy.

But NOW!!!???

I had read something awhile back about doctors giving a diagnosis of H1N1 without going through the proper tests, but I never saw any proof of it until now.

My sister-in-law went to her doctor with typical flu symptoms, after a short visit the doctor told her she had H1N1. She then inquired about a test to confirm her illness, he told her that the test was quite expensive, and the treatment would be the same at this point anyway. Although she has excellent health insurance, she was too tired and sick to argue.

I know H1N1 is out there, but I'm still not convinced with the numbers they are attributing to that strain.

Yes I agree with you there jaycr....I think some doctors may just take a guess at it. But then maybe they do so based on all the patients they've seen...they are all from the same basic area...I suppose...

But whatever you do, whether you choose to have the swine flu injection or not or take medications for stuff or not...ANY choice is a risk...if you have the injection...you could get sick...or maybe not! ...if you don't have it , you could get sick..or maybe not! You just have to weigh up anything for your own health.

Years ago [5 or so] , given the choice to remain really really sick OR take Thalidomide....what would you do?

I looked at it this way. If I DON"T take it, what is the worst thing that could happen? I get worse and DIE!
If I do take it? I possibly could get better OR I could die. In the second option I had a chance, so I took it.

And I am still here!

In both scenarios, I could die but in the second one I had a chance, so I took it.

See, so sometimes you really have to stand back and analyse it objectively.

I was told by a doctor that the "swab" test will test for a family of influenza that H1N1 belongs to, but that the test specifically for H1N1 is expensive, so they call any strain of flu in the same family "H1N1". This has artificially raised the diagnoses of "swine flu". In addition, there is nothing specifically about H1N1 that makes it more fatal than other forms of influenza.

I'm not that worried about swine flu/H1N1.. but my mom is. She forced me to go get the vaccine, but then I got sick - so now I don't know whether I'm getting it or not. My friends told me it hurt a lot though, so now I'm scared

yes...i heard something similar from my doctor about the cost.
I got the vaccine but he wasn't adamant I must have it [I am in that group of vulnerables]. He said "Yeah, it isn't a bad idea for you...you could wait until April when the new winter vaccine comes out. Swine flu vac will be incorporated into that. But go ahead and have one now, just in case"

I think it just boils down to what chances/risks you want to take...with either having it or not having it.

On the whole, I think the majority of people are selfish, unhygienic prats who go to work/school./shopping, sneezing, coughing, spreading their germs all the way....they are not considerate at all. If these people took more care at the start, there would be so much disease out there.

That's so true. Here, at least, in USA, there's also the old Work Ethic. They say, "If you're sick, stay home!"... but they don't mean it. People like my sister, who are obsessive/compulsive "do-ers", and especially "do-workers", just cannot stay home when they're sick. My sister will go to church, work, daughter's school, everywhere in fact, and so do the rest of the family, if they can, they do. If you don't go to work because you don't feel well and think you may have the flu, well, YOU may feel good about it, but everyone at work especially the managers will be talking about you like a DOG!

The Swine Flu might not be worse, but the regular flu is often fatal, so it's not like because it's not worse, it's nothing to worry about. Children have been killed by Swine Flu in large numbers this year, and yes, the "regular" flu kills lots of people every year, but that's no reason to NOT get vaccinated! All the med pros are saying you should get it. There's more reason, too, to get it than just not dying. If everyone gets it, the strain has less chance to thrive, and theoretically could be totally wi0ped out. But that never happens, because there's always either people who won't get it, or places where people can't get it... eventually it seeps back in.

well for example, I was in the post office line today and a guy behind me had such a fruity cough, all gnarly sounding and thick...he was coughing away...everyone was making faces...I did not turn around...I just got out as fast as I could!

That's the cough that kills a nation! YUK!

Yes! Although, for myself, I used to be unmercifully critical of people who cough on the street and don't cover their mouths at all... I just thought it was the most inconsiderate thing! I'm talking about on the street, tho, outside, not inside with others close by. So, anyway, my sister related an incident where she was at a register in a store and had both hands full, and she coughed. The woman at the register actually chastised my sis for not covering her mouth! My sister told her she couldn't cover her mouth because she had stuff in both hands!!!

After my sister told me this, and my sister is an extremely cautious rule-follower, I realized that I, yes, even I, did sometimes cough on the street without covering my mouth!!! And it wasn't always because I had both hands full, it was just that I was outside and distracted by traffic and other pedestrians and my to-do list, and I just didn't realize it! So, now I give the people who cough openly outside a little slack... but if you're inside, have a free hand, and there are people within a couple feet, you should def cover your mouth! Of course, maybe they just never thought of it, in which case someone should politely say something like, "I'm so sorry, I really hope you don't take this wrong, but could you please cover your mouth next time if you have to cough again?"

hmmmm... Idk if there's any way to say that without sounding extremely rude?

We had a young chap die a couple of weeks ago...He was 16. His parents took him to a rural hospital. He was given a panadol or the like and sent home. More backwards and forwards...gets sent home...couple of days...and he dies.

Upshot of the investigation into the cause of his death - SWINE FLU!!!!!

And the nurses [I don't think he got to see a doctor - or if he did it was a fleeting moment] said "Take a panadol. You'll be right!"

Poor boy and his poor parents.

Well, I was thinking. These are the days where parents choose to not vaccinate their children (i.e. see vaccinations debate in the debate forums) - and slowly but surely, we are seeing a resurgence of old bugs come back. I've heard that TB ( a disease that Australia has been free from for decades) is coming back into this country slowly.

Yesterday I heard that one of my distant cousins had foot-and-mouth disease! I didn't even know that was transmittable to humans!!

I think we really do need to vaccinate more often and push others to as well, before we have to face not only these new and scray bugs (i.e. swine flu) but old ones that we as a society have forgotten about as well!
