Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's story about a woman who claimed that her daughter suffered "mental retardation" after receiving a vaccine against HPV could fetch the woman's family thousands of dollars. But the family can only collect if Bachmann or the unnamed woman can prove the story is true.

Two bioethics professors have offered to pay more than $10,000 for medical records that prove the anecdote Bachmann told after Monday night's Republican presidential debate is true, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:

Steven Miles, a U of M bioethics professor, said that he'll give $1,000 if the medical records of the woman from Bachmann's story are released and can be viewed by a medical professional.

His offer was upped by his former boss from the University of Minnesota, Art Caplan, who is now director of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics. Caplan said he would match Miles' challenge and offered $10,000 for proof of the HPV vaccine victim.

"'These types of messages in this climate have the capacity to do enormous public health harm,'" Miles said of why he made the offer. 'The woman, assuming she exists, put this claim into the public domain and it's an extremely serious claim and it deserves to be analyzed.'"

Bachmann told the story after she criticized opponent Texas Gov. Rick Perry for using an executive order in 2007 to mandate that all girls entering the sixth grade receive a vaccination against the Human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer. The Texas legislature overturned the mandate and the policy was never enacted.

"There's a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate," Bachmann said after the debate, where she had told Perry on stage that she was "offended" by his decision. "She said her daughter was given that vaccine. She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result of that vaccine." She repeated the story to several news outlets over the next 24 hours and sent a fundraising letter to supporters about the exchange she had with Perry on the debate stage.

When pressed by Fox News' Sean Hannity on his radio program about the story, Bachmann said she had "no idea" if it were true.

Bachmann's story drew criticism members of the medical community along with several conservatives allies, including radio host Rush Limbaugh, who have refused to defend her. Ed Rollins, who advised Bachmann's campaign through the summer, said she should take it back.

"She made a mistake," Rollins said on MSNBC. "The quicker she admits she made a mistake and moves on, the better she is."

Just in case anyone might know a person whose child was affected by the vaccine -- speak up now and earn money for your story! Of course, I don't think anyone will really. Personally, I think all politicians are born with a truth-deficit gene or something. LOL!

I know of someone. This vaccine effected her nervous system. She'll never walk correctly again. Throws her whole body into spasms. And yes, it was proven that this vaccine she and her sister received, caused this. Her sister escaped any ill effects. She did not. And it's not temporary. It's permanent. Do some research before you berate Bachmann for sharing information she was aware of.

In my opinion, if it can cause damage to a persons nervous system, as severely as it did this girl my daughter went to school with, it could in fact, cause mental retardation.

The majority of people that received this vaccine had no problems, but do some research. This vaccine was not tested enough before it was made available to the public.

It has NOT been proven that there's any connection between the vaccine and any neurological problems.

This is even worse than when those goofs tried to link MMR vaccinations to autism. Despite all the sound medical proof that there's no connection, ignorant parents are sometimes still opting out.

Now Bachman is trying desperately to regain lost footing. She's willing to allow preventable deaths due to cervical cancer rather than lose a political race. Truly a shameful choice.

What I'm saying is that the girl I brought up, did in fact have a reaction to the vaccine, and it did in fact cause permanent damage to her nervous system. The doctors treating her linked it to the vaccine. THAT has been proven. It may have been an isolated incident, but it did happen.

It's not my fight, not my daughter. But if it were, and I was not forced to get my child this vaccine, then I'd not have a case, unless I could prove that this vaccine was not tested enough, which I doubt I could. If I was forced to, then that's a different story. There's nothing funny about this Mathgeek - I understand you're a minor, but really, there's nothing funny about this - not to mention that you are spamming.

Mathgeek - Snowmonster is completely correct. Your response is highly inappropriate.

That sounds a lot like the Desiree Jennings case a couple years ago - the girl who mysteriously had spasms, couldn't walk, had speech issues, etc. after receiving a flu shot. Almost every credible doctor, specialist, and even foundations associated with dystonia dismissed the case a psychogenic movement disorder. That is....it was in her head, rather than a disorder caused by the shot.

Since then, she has been (at least partially) "cured".

Well, this isn't in this girls head. And it's been about 3 years, and she's not cured. And by the doctors that treated her, etc. it was determined that it was from the vaccine. Her nervous system had been damaged. There was proof of that, and they linked it to the vaccine. I'm not saying this is happening all over the place. 1 in how many . . . . IKD, but it's alarming to say the least, and it's worth considering that this vaccine really needs to be studied more. What I say, is that if it could cause this type of damage, it could possibly cause mental retardation. Then again, the mother that approached Bauchman could have been wrong. I do believe though, that whether to vaccine or not is the question here - and who makes the decision - parent or government. I'm all for vaccines, but I have to feel comfortable with it first. This vaccine, should be treated like any other - tested, then "available" to the general public. Allow the parents to decide. It's a vaccine that would protect against cancer, something that is NOT contagious, unless I'm totally wrong with this and there are cancers that are contagious. . . . . So, why would it be mandated, forced on the public. It should be the parents decision whether this vaccine should be given to their child. And for that, Bauchman was right, and Perry wrong.

Read the whole article:
When pressed by Fox News' Sean Hannity on his radio program about the story, Bachmann said she had "no idea" if it were true

So she gets up, tells the world that someone was harmed by a vaccine, and then later when pressed on the issue she admits that she has "no idea" if the story is true or not?

I stick with my statement:
Personally, I think all politicians are born with a truth-deficit gene or something.
