Amanda Knox Verdict

The American and her boyfriend both found not guilty of murder, after spending four years in prison from their arrest in 2007. They were convicted of the crime in 2009, Knox got 26 years, her boyfriend got 25, there was little evidence, but she got convicted the first time, which many called a rush to judgement. To anyone following or had followed the case, what do you think of the verdict?

Americans might look at this and say the Italian justice system is terrible. However, at the same time, I'd prefer a self-correcting system such as this one, over some American systems like in cases such as Troy Davis i.e. cases where there is no room for correction.

From what I've read, I guess it's a good thing she was released since there was very little evidence, but it didn't help that she initially lied to the police and prosecutors. No one knows what really happened, but just because she's an American we shouldn't just assume this is "injustice" on Italy's part, or that she must be innocent (as the American media tends to do - especially in these international cases).

Funny. Just heard this on the news when I see this topic.

Amanda Knox was arrested for incriminating evidence of murdering her roommate. The evidence wasn't proof enough, so after 4 years in custody, she is let free, without compensation.

What's wrong with this world?

without compensation??? oh my god, I never heard about that part of it before.

Well, of course, like Harry says, we can't really know. I've never had a strong feeling about it one way or the other. I saw several independent (NOT hired by the family or connected with them at all) investigators say that there was NO evidence at all to convict Knox and her bf.

So I think I'm glad for her that she's out. I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to be imprisoned for 4 years, or like the West Memphis 3, what was it, 18 years(?), when you're innocent.

I think the West Memphis Three is similar because they were both essentially scapegoats, although in the Knox case, there was a third party who is in jail and has said to other inmates that Knox and Socilleto were innocent. The West Memphis Three I had considered innocent, but during her first trial, I thought Knox was guilty, but while I don't think she's innocent, I think she's "not guilty", as in she may have done it, but their was no proof. The other thing about the West Memphis Three was that two got life, and one was gonna get the needle sometime in I think August 2012,(with no appeals and such), while with good behavior and parole, Knox could've been out in 15 years, while the West Memphis Three had already served more than that.

There's an excellent documentary of the West Memphis Three's case which I saw years ago. The thing was, that during the trial, the prosecutors said things like: Since the victims (3 young boys) were found with their hands tied behind their backs, and since one of the WM3 had read books on witchcraft, and since there were drawings of Satanic sacrifices of children showing the children with hands bound behind their backs, that it was obvious that the boys being tried were guilty of performing a satanic ritual in which they sacrificed the three boys.

Yeah, that is for real! And the judge allowed all this ridiculous stuff. I mean, having hands tied behind your back could also be said to be a sign of just about ANY activity involving people being tied up!

There was just something funny about the behaviour of Knox and Socilleto directly after the murder. Doing cartwheels just before being interviewed about the incident, for example. She just looked guilty, and perhaps a little unhinged. Let alone the evidence. But when there isn't sufficient evidence then there's no case. We live in a civilisation where you must be proven guilty, not proven innocent. And I guess we should all just have faith in that.

Without actually hearing the evidence for ourselves, and just getting snippets from the media, I suppose we aren't best placed to judge.
