Mass Hysteria?
I've seen some of the girls on TV, being interviewed. They were all with their families, and although at first I was skeptical, they really have nothing to gain by "pretending". They don't all know each other, and there are at least two who aren't teenage girls. They were on the Anderson Cooper show recently if you want to search for the show.

Shawn they have been reporting this nearly every day on the Buffalo news TV stations and finally decided to stop showing videos of the kids at the request of medical and official people. Apparently once they stopped seeing themselves on TV, some of the kids have recovered significantly, suggesting they have a conversion disorder. One of the girls may have had a significant symptom of conversion disorder, and it spread like wildfire to others, and the constant replaying of the videos on TV added fuel to that fire.So when conversion disorder breaks out in a larger group, it's called mass psychogenic illness, according to what I've read.A mass psychogenic illness affects groups of people in the same environment, such as a class at school or workers in an office who get similar physical symptoms at the same time. From what I've read and seen, this situation is real, not made up and a lot of people are paying attention, including Erin Brockovich, who your link indicates.
It's really a strange situation and I for one am anxiously awaiting the outcome of all the testing and investigating that is being done.

Wow! That is so interesting.
I am skeptical when it comes to psychologists and psychoanalysists... when they say "It is all in your head"
I know that for some conditions and people it IS but for some it is NOT.
And it is hard to work out who is in which group.
I can't see why any girl or boy for that matter, in that age group, would WANT to have a twitch?!
So it must be something that has happened or affected they body/brain....
Keep us informed if there is any progress on this, shawneeo!

It is definately an interesting situation. I also agree with Snappy... I get a bit skeptical when things are on the news... too many people wanting their 15 minutes of fame, too many people trying to copy something that got some one else in the lime light. But, I do believe this is a true disorder with many people.

There's nothing strange about it. Have you read the Life's Little Mysteries article?

Bobbie, I'm so glad you posted because I had NO idea that there was this intensive coverage on TV in the area where it's happening. On the Anderson Cooper show, they never once mentioned that it had been on the news every day like that! I got the feeling that this was the first time the girls had even been on TV. Wow.
What the psychs were saying is that, although it's "in the head", it's also real. IOW, they said, the girls aren't deliberately doing it, but it's not being caused by any disease or toxin, etc. They said that stress can build up and then come out in conversion disorder, and that the process is unconscious.
But, it's a slippery slope. The psychs may just not know what the cause is. I had a doctor once listen to my complaint of chest pain, ask me a few very pointed questions, and then conclude that "it's anxiety". Well, it was not anxiety, and I did discuss this with him, but he was sure he was right. However, if anyone had seen his method of diagnosis, they would have laughed. He was so obviously predisposed to give an "anxiety" diagnosis instead of investigating the problem to any depth at all!
But, probably Bobbi will by the one who's most up-to-date on this issue so I hope you can keep us posted, Bobbi!?

Don't get me started. I've been gone for almost 5 months because of doctors, but hopefully I had some good doctors in there too so at least for now I am back.

Thanks everyone for the welcome back. I think I need to come back home where I can be comfortable and know that I can trust most of the people. Not sure my mind is as sharp as it used to be, but I suppose we will find out when I start playing games again. And I have been told I will have to take things slow and spend a lot of time with my feet up, but had a lap top added to my computer family so if I have to I can lay back and type on here. Am going home by April 1st - and I keep telling my kids, that is no April Fool's joke

Welcome HOME, V! Idk anything about your health, but I'm glad you are at least OK and posting here! I did notice you weren't posting and I would've started making inquiries very soon... I myself was ill for two weeks, been OK for a full week, and Spring is happening in it's own strange way here... don't know whether to be glad or worried, since we didn't even get a half-inch of snow this Winter, and hardly any temps under freezing at all!
