85 year old Pope Benedict Vi resigns, citing ill health. He would be the first pope to voluntarily leave the position in 600 years.

I think a lot of it has to do with the child abuse cases that he dealt with in 85, which he helped sweep under the rug. Wouldn't be surprised if more revelations are made, but people have been calling for his resignation since 2010 on these grounds.

Slight correction... it was Pope Benedict XVI who resigned... 10 popes later with the same name as you stated. Now, I am not Catholic, but my wife is. I certainly do not understand the Catholic religion in any case, nor why someone has to give themselves a different name to be Pope. Seems like Pope Theodore 1 is just as good of a name as anything else (I haven't checked, maybe there has been a pope with that name)... I don't think God looks at a name as the necessity of governing over a church.
I heard a rumor it had a lot to do with WWII and how the Germans treated the Jews.
In any case, some people can not get over anything and will never forgive. I will always stay out of politics or office, as I sure would not want what I did when I was 4 to come back to bite me! Oh no.. never... I have my pride!

I heard a rumour the pope wanted to avoid prosecution.
The first week of the year of the snake has sure been an eventful one. The pope resigns, then a meteor collides ... been a pretty thriller/sci-fi-ish week.

He gives two weeks' notice he's resigning with the reason being "really really old. Like, seriously, went to high school with Jesus's dad." The problem I can tell right from the start is twofold:
1-The Pope is supposed to be really old.
2-More importantly, he knew well before now he was going to be this old. It should not be any surprise to him how old he is. Thus, him popping this in with two weeks of notice is sketchy at best. A few months of notice and it would have been quite mundane, as much as any papal resignation can be. But the short notice raises some red flags.

He declared that he couldn't perform the required duties well enough. That's a reason why people get fired. That is clearly a reason to resign and allow someone else to perform the actions better.

Yeah, but popes aren't supposed to resign ...

He realized it on pretty short notice. Again, "being 85" is something someone can predict.

I know that the church (catholic, protestant, non-christian) has dealt with corruption in the past. But I think the Pope is simply aware of his aging body, wants the best for the church, and knows he is not the best right now because of his health. I do not see why everyone seems to think it has to do with child abuse, and other scandals.

I'd say its because the Pope resigned (first in 500 years or something) at around the same time lots of scandal/child abuse reports came out.
Ill give him the benefit of the doubt until something more concrete appears, but there is actual reason behind it.
