Where's the medical lovers, students or professionals of? Would you be interested in starting a way of learning about healthcare field, such as terms, suffixs, prefixes, combining forms, blood/diagnostic testing, laws/ethics and procedures. Things that people learning this field should know about or wanting to know more of. Leaving behind like a short quiz or series of questions to test and inform. So who's ready??
I wanna see who all are interested before we start posting pls. I wanna keep a list of the people that will be participating. I ask that you leave your job title if you are in the medical field or a student in the medical field, what are you going for. If you're just a lover of all things medical then put that instead of the job title.

Very well put! We shall share personal experiences, give support, get support, share information, relate to each other, show concern, things like that. I am a professional and you guys are my friends, not my clients, or patients of doctors I work with in my field. It is hard sometimes to remember that though. But I, for one must remember that, and Braingle is a good place for me to practice THAT!! Celtica anyone out there?

Hey and thanks for posting. I havn't grabbed many interest in this topic but we can make it fun and enjoyable for the two of us..
So we can start by asking questions..
1. What's your profession?
2. How many years have you been in there?
3. Have you worked in both the hospital and physician offices?
4. How much training did you need?

Autumn I went to school for 6 years, that probably varies state to state, I suppose. I have worked for 32 years, part time now, can't pull a full day any more. Worked in Mental Health Centers(hospital), no drs. offices, but with drs. at hospital. Social worker L.S.W. I also train Facilitators for DBSA part time, have one group for those with mental illness one day a week. We meet for 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. Have about 12 regulars currently in that group. Please if you have time research my other posts.....Celtica, Thanks!

Hello there Celtica, so I have been in school for the past almost 3yrs. now but haven't been able to work in my field. When I graduate this time I will be working as a MAA, received my RMA as of two months ago, but need additional education and training. I'm also a Medical Coder/Biller and a HUC. I want to get into occupational therapy the programs at schools are filled well into the a couple yrs. ... When I got into the medical field I didn't know all about the many specialties you could choose from or that there were so many paths within the health care world. Tell me about your experience and what made you choose from your path instead of the others?

Well, I started out as a medical assistant I got credit for it my senior year of high school.Worked at that a while, hated it. Back then drs. were still screaming at nurses, etc. I left that field, went into x ray especially dental (surgical) x rays for oral surgeons. Work in oral surgery quickly took my back out. So I went to school in Albuquerque at University. I was there in May of '72 when the riots broke out on campus. The police, national guard, etc. were there and the war was on. Lots of screaming and running for shelter. Lots of very loud BOOMS going off. We holed up in the math bldg. for about 11 hours, til the guardsmen broke the door down. I have PTSD now. Any loud noise sets me off a crying. yuck.. Oh yeah the college was protesting Viet Nam war. They closed off the campus, which meant no more finals! That was the good part. I scramed my way home as fast as I could get myself there. Finished schooll at Okla University.Got my 1st job as a social workerwith the state child welfare.Worked at that for about 10 years. You gotta have guts to handle cases like that. Decided I needed a more calm job so I started working cases of the Mentally Ill. They are the sweetest people I know. They love to laugh and give the greatest hugs! Lots of stigma and misunderstanding in the public about these peopleWhen they see me coming thru their door, they eun to me saying KaJo,KaJo (Rebeka Jo) and then we swap candies and then eat it and say Ummmmmm good and giggle.Ionly work part time now (health) I also train people for a Mental Health org, and have a group that meets once a week for therapy. It's great and I always learn more than I counsel. this is getting long so I'll stop here for now.Thank you for your friendship.

Autumn, I don't know where you live, but let me tell you here in WNY the need for both PT's and OT"s is desperate. A PT or OT with Masters or Doctorate can pretty much set their own hours, salary etc. There is an excellent school in Buffalo, NY that offers an excellent program for both. And boy, medical coders are in high demand as well. I wish I were younger, I'd definitely go into PT for sure.

Well that is one reason why I havnt been on here, figuring out and looking into OT and/or PT Vs OTA(Assistant) PTA... Don't know which I'm going to choose, then you have RN's, LPN's and Radiology that are in high deman also here in Ohio. I'm confused about what I wanna do in this huge medical field, I went in with a plan and now swimming in many decisions. That's better than not having many at all I know and I'm grateful just overwhelmed as far as where I wanna take my career.

I'm not sure what I wanna do in this big world in the medical field. Can anybody offer personal or otherwise further knowledge on what are some best ways to get educated and make good money? I am a Medical Asst, Health unit coordinator and coder and biller but have yet to get a job in either. I been considering nursing but only because that's where the jobs are and the money is very good I hear. Money is helpful but getting a career for money is not my thing, I'd rather love what I do instead of get paid thousands. I'm not sure if I wanna be in the back or front of things, if I want direct or indirect pt care. I don't think I'd like to work in a very fast paced environment, or for it to be hard on your back and knees. Something to be able to get a job quick in and be able to advance to a better position. I thought about Occupation Therapy Asst. or a LPN
*Serious replies only please

Autumn, Sounds like you need to be at the very least a LPN to open doors for you in the future. Myabe an RN ot Psyc. Assnt ot Mental health nurse. or psycicatric nurse in the office, or medical billing. Whatever you choose go for tethe money with a 20 yr. retirement, like for the state jobs. The money is better in the end towards retirement. I just retired from the state after 25 yrs. of service. now I work Part time for DBSA OK. Worked out nice and I ave reflexability o what I wanna do.
Go for the money, It wont let you down, people will. My 2 cents worth here. Celtica

No, I don't agree...Don't go for the money.
You wont enjoy the job you are doing and therefore you will not do it well.
Choose something for which you have a passion.

I agree with snappy - people who go for the money (in my experience) end up bitter and twisted, because they choose money over passion. Of course, it'd be great if you find a field of medical science that you LOVE and gives good money!!
If I were you, I'd also be thinking about where you want your life to go.
Do you want to travel? Nursing in some countries is a difficult job that doesn't pay well (i.e. Australia).
Do you want to have a large family? Some medical jobs mean you work odd hours and can be away for long periods of time - not the best situation for a family.
When I picked my career, I considered medicine, but decided against it because when I sat down and thought about where I wanted my LIFE to go (i.e what my hopes and dreams were), I realised that it would never happen if I were to be in the medical field. I didn't want to be a physio, an OT, a nurse - I wanted to be a dr, and that wouldn't be condusive to what I wanted to do/be in my life.
Write a list of your hopes and dreams, and before making any final decisions as to your final career choice, consult the list and honestly consider if the job would impact.

Thank You guys so much for your imput, personal or none. I recently read into OTA since Im too old to become a OT, and OTA's not only help assist pts with physical disabilities or ailments but they work with adults and children in mental and pstchosocial issues in their lives hendering them from being a productive and otherwise healthy individual in order to do your job or general living right. I always stuck by not going for the money but for what I have a passon for, I tell others that. Althoug money is nice and very much needed I don't wanna be about that. It's shallow and has no substance to me in a way but I dont judge others that feel that way.
