Do you want to increase your brain synchronization, also known as 'whole brain use'? Meditating increases the pathway between the left and right hemispheres, which can very much contribute to your overall smartness.

There are different techniques for meditating, and the way it works is that it alters the state of brainwaves.
The human brain has four states of brainwaves - beta, alpha, theta, and delta. In that order, beta has the highest speed and lowest amplitude, and delta has the lowest speed and highest amplitude.
When you are awake and in active cognition, like when talking with someone, you are in beta which is the most active state with 15-40 cycles per second. Then at times you are really relaxed and not thinking too actively, like when having a bath, your brain declines to the alpha state. Then once you get in bed but haven't fallen asleep yet, your brain declines to the theta stage, and once you fall asleep it processes to delta which has 1.5-4 cycles per second.
Meditating adjusts your state of brainwaves from beta to alpha and theta. The higher amplitude enables the brainwaves to form stronger, deeper pathways between the left and right hemispheres through a part of the brain called the corpus callosum.
It is very much recommended that if you want to meditate, you get trained how to do so by somebody certified to train. Meditating often makes you more conscious of your actions, which can make you feel more guilt at times. It's sometimes used as a way to help make criminals feel guilt for their actions.
If you want to learn more about this, a website about the brainwaves is at www.web-us.com/brainwavesfunction.htm
A website about the brain synchronization of meditating is at www.monroeinstitute.com/content.php?content_id=33

What exactly are the beneficial effects of hemispheric synchrony? Do you have better memory when this state is achieved? Is the brain quicker at processing information?

Hemispheric synchrony has been linked to improvements in things like language/reading/writing, spatial cognition, creativity, intuition, and multi-tasking.
The way it works is the majority of people predominantly use their left hemisphere. The left hemisphere functions for things like logic, reasoning, attention to detail, objectiveness, linear reasoning of language, auditory cognition, and control of right side of the body. The right hemisphere functions for things such as creativity, visual cognition, intuition, perception, instinctuality, holistic reasoning of language, and control of left side of the body.
Now, it's important to note that both sides do some of everything. It's just that each side has a bit of a bias for what they do and performs better on some things.
With good 'whole brain' use, you can take advantage of the strengths each hemisphere has. Say for things like problem solving and writing, you need creativity to think of any possible solutions or text, and logic to analyze what will work best.

The part of the brain that connects that left and right hemispheres is the corpus callosum. Interestingly, and I don't mean to be sexist, women are known to have higher density of fibers in their corpus callosums. That's believed to be why women tend to be better multi-taskers and have more intuition.

Does anyone know if there is a type of meditation that increases short term memory so that you don't forget things as often?

I don't know if different types of meditation affect memory differently, but I can explain one reason it helps improve short-term memory. Meditating reduces your feelings of stress, and stress produces a stress-hormone in the nervous system called cortisol. Cortisol has a damaging effect on neurons, so chronic stress actually has an atrophic effect on a part of the brain called the hippocampus.
The hippocampus is a part of the brain crucial for memories. It stores short-term memories, and selects which of them should be stored long-term. People with damage to their hippocampus do things like check their mail three times in the same day because they are unable to remember doing it the other two times. Reducing stress reduces the atrophic effect that cortisol has on the hippocampus.

Something else you might like to know is that the hippocampus tends to be preferential towards things with emotion, so if you can apply emotion to things, you will remember them better.

If you experience procrastination then yes, meditating may be able to help you with that. It is very much recommended though that you get trained how to meditate by someone certified to do so.

Altogether, meditating is good for your overall mental health like exercising is for your body. It has calming effects, which research has found helps for a variety of things like Attention Deficit Disorder, anxiety, insomnia, chronic fatigue, migraines, and stress.
It increases your brain's supply of serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter than gives you the good feelings of happiness and well being. Not enough serotonin is linked to depression, and the most commonly used antidepressant prescribed is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI), which increases your brain's supply of serotonin.
Meditating also increases your brain's supply of endorphins, which are natural painkillers in the nervous system.
Meditating also significantly increases your brain's supply of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is the most common steroid hormone in the blood. DHEA is found as a supplement because studies have linked it to increased sense of well-being, improved memory, improved immunity, reduced body fat, and increased bone density. It is also converted into many other hormones used in the body like androgens and estrogens.

If you want to take a test that assesses your hemispheric synchrony and learning style, there's one at http://web.tickle.com/tests/brain/index_main.jsp

I've meditated since I was six. My mother showed me how. I do it by:
Sitting cross legged with the best postor (sp?) you can get and focus on my breathing. Just my breathing. You say in your head, "In... two... three... Hold... two... three... Out... two... three... In... two..." and breathe accordingly. Do this for a half an hour and a beginner could get into a meditative state on their first try, but many do not have the patience and it takes them a few times. Please let me know your results.
Call me Jay. Please. |
