I'm proposing a new idea...Quiz reform!

My idea to ban lyrics quizzes was a bit 'radical', I admit, but it was just to draw attention to an ever increasing problem on the site. Right now more than a quarter of all quizzes are lyrics quizzes (if that rings any alarm bells).

I think there should be a higher standard of actual TRIVIA involved in trivia quizzes. Simply filling in the blanks of a song is hardly a standard for trivia at all and it lowers the overall quality of the quizzes here. This would obviously discourage users getting less recognition for far more effort, whereas a person who put in only a small amount of time to copy and paste a song into 10 questions has a quiz award and is a top quiz maker on the site.

This is like the problem Braingle had with rebuses - using the same thoughtless format. It's not that the rebuses were WRONG, it's just that they didn't meet the Braingle standard. So I suggest that we raise the standard of trivia required for quizzes.

If there's no legitimate trivia aspect, the quiz shouldn't be accepted! Plain and simple. Any thoughts?

I agree with you 100%, in principle. However, the actual practice might put Braingle on a slippery slope. Let me try and explain.

My hope for the Braingle trivia section is that authors are motivated by a desire to entertain/educate other users on topics the author is passionate about. I further hope that "awards" and points are far, far down the list in terms of motivations. I hope that each author puts as much thought and care into writing their quizzes as I take writing mine and reviewing theirs.

One can guess and presume at the motivation and amount of thought put into some of these quizzes, but that's all it can ever be, a guess or a presumption. We cannot know the minds of these authors with any certainty, nor should we enact policy based on unproven suppositions.

In general, I am opposed to the "banning" of most things, it's just not a practice I like. In addition, I, like Harry, do not enjoy the massive amount of lyric based quizzes that lack further insight into the artist or the song itself, nor do I rate them very high. Let me be clear, I am NOT opposed to lyric based quizzes, I think lyric quizzes CAN be of this "high standard" Harry alludes to. In fact, I have 3 lyric based quizzes I am very proud of and worked very hard on.

In closing, while I would not condone the banning of a specific type of quiz, I am in full support of further investigation into this trend and I would be thrilled to be a part of improving the trivia section.

I have to agree with the majority of Hrsemn's post. I find the increase of quizzes based on simple, one line lyrics is quite boring and doesn't really show much more effort than a simply copy and paste. In my opinion, I think musical lyric quizzes can be interesting if more effort is put into creating them. I do believe that the Music category could stand a bit of overhauling and will be looking into this.

Thanks for your concerns, Harry.

I agree with you Harry. I don't even bother taking the lyric quizzes. There's nothing to learn from them and there's no knowledge necessary to complete them except a familiarity with the song.
