Recently there have been some incidents of spam via PM. What happens is that someone creates a new account, and then sends out several hundred private messages to people with spammy contents. When this happens, people should click the "report spam" link, which reports it to me and I will block that user from sending more PMs.
This could be reduced by placing a limit on the number of PMs that anyone could send in a day. I doubt there are many people who send more than 30 PMs a day, but if there are, make yourself known.
Or if you have other ideas, I'd like to hear that too.

Personally I really don't mind these spam messages, I think they're fairly funny to be honest. However, I could definitely agree with a PM cap, but 10 would be too low. I probably send 10 PMs a month, so I'm not exactly the perfect example, but I'm just thinking during somebody's birthday or something, sending out "thank-you" messages.
30 seems like a reasonable number. Like I said, this cap isn't really ever going to affect me, so I could care less what number you ultimately decide on. Still, anything to cut down on spam is typically a good idea, as long as it doesn't become too much of a hassle for the normal user.
Maybe pick a number and give it a test-run? There's bound to be people who don't read this thread and will start complaining if it's too low, then just be flexible with it. I think anywhere from 25-50 would be good (but I don't know exactly how many PMs these spam accounts have been sending out, so maybe 50 is too high).

People here less than a year, and with no good karma should have a cap. I think.

I like the idea of 30. I don't think most people would send out that many PM's in a day unless they are spamming. Maybe if they are running a game, and need to send out information, it would get close up there, but I don't see honest people sending out more than that.

But what about people who have conversations? On quite a few days I'll legitimately go over 50 because me and one person are chatting. And with multiple conversations, it just gets higher and higher.
Plus modding games would quickly use messages.
Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I've 'refreshed' my whole outbox in one day without spamming.....
Well then. |

I've had to send out more that 30 PMs at a time before, just for important talkbox announcements and similar things. Users may also use PMs to hold a conversation with another/more user(s), as iforgotbraingle stated above.
I think that there should be a cap for PMs depending on karma. Maybe something like this:-2 karma - 5 (or 0, if PMs restricted) PMs/day
-1 karma - 10 PMs/day
0 karma - 15 PMs/day
1 karma - 30 PMs/day
2 karma - 45 PMs/day
3 karma - unlimited PMs/day

Mods always tell us to not have private conversations in the public forums and we should instead use PMs. So I think there might be more spam with the caps in place.
Well then. |

I like the idea of it being time or karma limited. Since most of these spam messages are coming from people who have just signed up, having a karma cap would prevent them from sending many messages.

I also like the idea of having a karma cap as well as opposed to a site wide limit. If someone is new to the site and joining only for the purpose of sending out spam PM, they won't stick around long enough, or be active enough, to earn the good karma required to send out a ton of PMs. Also, a karma cap will not restrict those members who are good, active members from sending out as many PMs as they may need to for various reasons.
I know during certain holidays, lots of members will send out Christmas, New Years, Easter, or Valentine PMs which can exceed 30 PMs very easily. Another situation that could involve a mass amount of PMs, would be in regards to wiki secret pages, games, or various hunts (again, some holiday related) which require a PM to the wiki creator and a reply to that member.

Yes, the karma cap sounds good. The spammer(s) probably won't be around long enough to earn good karma.
However, I don't like the idea of the time cap. Some users are active from the time they joined, and they might earn karma really quickly. If they are good people who behave themselves, why should they be blocked from sending many PMs on, say, Christmas?
I voted "yes, more than 30" on the poll. While I don't usually send more than 30 PMs in a day, there are probably people who do, for the reasons Froggy listed above.

I also agree with the karma limit as well, it seems like the best solution to prevent spam while still allowing good and active members on Briangle to use PM's for various reasons previously stated.

I see this failing. It'll just spam up the public forums because the spammers will move there.
OR there will just be more spam accounts! There's no way to win. If you set it at anything over 15 then it'll be "worth" their time to farm accounts. If you set it lower, it'll cripple the pm system.
If pms are used to take personal matters out of the public forums, but the days quota is up....
*shrugs*
If there is a quota, perhaps allow unlimited to friends, people in one's talkbox, owners of boxes one is in, and people in a wtb/twg one is modding.
Well then. |

I like the suggestion of a PM cap only for people with low karma or who are recent members.
What about:
20PMs per day cap for people without positive karma
and
20PMs per day cap for people who have been a member for less than 2 months

There are proxies which can get around IP blocking. Or just hide the connection altogether.

idk... I dont so much like limiting it... I havent had much of a problem but if it really is a problem then is ok. I just dont like seeing honest to goodness new brainglers to be limited
I guess the spammers ruin it for everyone.

I don't really foresee this being a problem. However, if spam does begin to pop up in the forums, that is why we have Moderators who will delete the spam.

I don't think you need to worry since Jake is probably aware of these type of situations.
Jake, will the 2 month cap apply to new members who are new subscribers? I really don't think a new member is going to buy a subscription to the site only to turn around and spam it. Just a thought.
