We all realize that there are things that we learn because we have children, right? OK, my cat likes bananas, pickles, and ear wax.
There I said it.

Raccoons love chickens... a raccoon is like a really strong and super smart housecat.

Add to our menagerie two young female rats: Oreo and Olive, both "black-hooded fancy rats".

Is that really true? Coons rip open chickens and eat the food out of them but don't eat the actual chickens? EWWWW! I'll never see a coon the same way again!
I always thought raccoons were cute little critters who wash their hands in creeks, look like they're wearing a mask, and like to rummage in trash cans, and I found out when I lived in Brooklyn that coons can live in semi-urban areas if there are some woodsy areas. I saw raccoons in Brooklyn, at night, going through garbage cans next to a very large cemetery that has lots of trees, and then there's some areas with trees, like vacant lots but with a small forest kinda thing...
I never really thought of them killing and eating anything except maybe fish? For sure I wouldn't have thought they were fast enough to catch and kill a chicken? EW!

we actually had a coon reach into our coop and grab one of my ducks by the neck, pull her head through a hole and rip out her throat. yes, it was a nasty mess to discover the next morning and very sad she was a beautiful little duck i had named sasha (after sasha cohen the figureskater) and was planning on taking her to our county fair. we have lost countless chickens and ducks to coons over the past 16 years that we have been raising them. coons to us are PEST!

Wow! EW! ugh... But why is there grain in the chickens/ducks necks? Doesn't it go down to their stomachs? So, do coons eat any animals, or just do the neck-ripping trick?
deepsea do you live in NYC? I didn't know that, if you do. Well, the area was next to Greenwood Cemetery, if you know where that is. I didn't live there, but I was walking around the outside of the cemetery at night, just walking and happened to be there. I didn't live too far from there. But where I saw the coons was like, the house was right next to the cemetery which is very woodsy, and I think there's a park or two in the area. It seems that if there's any area like a park or wooded lot of cemetery, with lots of big trees and bushes, that the coons can live there and then forage in people's trash cans at night in the vicinity. I was shocked when I first saw one, I had no idea there were any at all anywhere around there!

no, coons do not eat the meat. they just rip them (chickens, ducks and geese) and eat the grain. yes, its really gross but, its a thing ive gotten used to unfortunetly.

The only pet I've ever had was a cricket that I had to take care of for this biology summer class thing- and it died 3 or 4 days later..

Cool! There are so few things like that these days, things that have been passed down from generation to generation! I mean, the HUGE house my Mom grew up in and my G-parents lived in for years, after my G-pop died was sold and my G-mom wanted to live in a "community" thing. My Dad's parents had a farmhouse on many acres, with a stream and gardens, and they moved to a housing project nearby... It kills me because all that history, heritage, character, are just abandoned!
Why no pics of Patrick? You've GOT to take pics of your baby! (and show them to us!) We won't be able to tell where he is from the pic so you don't have to worry that one of us will lamb-nap him!

I just got my first pet a few weeks ago (to me, the fishies my sisters and I tortured growing up don't count!) A beautiful yellow lab puppy! My husband ended up naming him Butter, I call him my little Butterball
