I voted with the majority, so far! The various revolutions/protests in the Mid-East have been a very big deal! Even if it's not covered much in the USA, those revolutions have been a long time in coming, and a sign of things to come, I think. Many of them were spread by networking on the net, and that's another really new and significant feature of these protests.
It's going to be very interesting to see what happens in the next few years, in the Mid-East, and everywhere else too!

From flooding, volcanoes, typhoons, tornadoes, heat wave, fires, cyclones, earthquakes, plane crashes, ferry/ship crashes, mining accidents/cave ins, hospital fires, tsunamis, famine, hurricanes, killings, e. coli outbreaks, train wrecks, riots, wars, peoples deaths (Steve Jobs, Kim Jong-il, Osama bin Laden, Amy Winehouse, Andy Rooney, Joe Frazier, etc...), anniversaries (Chinese Revolution, Chinese Communist Party, Pearl Harbor Incident, China joined the WTO, 911, etc...), weddings, economic problems, and protests it all depends on which country you live in to say which of the above would be the "Most Important Event of 2011".

My vote went to the Japanese earthquake, for a couple of reasons.
This was not only a 9.0 earthquake/tsunami but also a nuclear disaster; a 12-mile region around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant plus some adjacent areas remain off-limits. It may be years or even decades before many of the 100,000 residents displaced by the disaster can return. As recently as December, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda stressed that "the battle against the accident is not over." even though the government declared that the plant had achieved "cold shutdown conditions".
Secondly the sheer numbers are staggering. As of August 2011, Deaths: 15698 – Missing: 4666 – Total: 20364.
111,944 destroyed buildings, 139,870 partially destroyed buildings, 517,050 partially damaged buildings.
The island of Honshu appears to have moved 7 feet 10.5 inches (2.4 meters) after the quake.

To be honest, I'm surprised Bin Laden has so many votes, as I consider it to be a pretty insignificant event compared to a few of the other options listed.
I mean, Prince William's wedding was so lovely, the world is forever changed.

Well, Prince William's wedding would be a little further down on my list, maybe 2 or 3. 
I picked the Japanese earthquake. Definitely a significant event that impacted many, many lives. Such a tragedy.

I actually voted a few days ago and as I was about to post my reply I got sidetracked. I too voted for the Japan earthquake. Lots of places have earthquakes. I lived through one of the bigger ones (Northridge 1994)... but think the Japan earthquake of 2011 puts the Northridge quake as a whimper. If you remove the ocean activity and the nuclear problems... maybe it would not have had the significant amount of disaster I put with it... but they are part of it and I doubt anyone can minimize their impact on changing the life in Japan because of them.
I can also see how a couple other events of 2011 can either top this, tie it, or come close to it... however, as I look back to that time, so long ago, 2011... the Japan earthquake is still tops on my list~!
