Hey so i've been writing songs for about three years and i'm considering entering my lyrics to a songwriting contest. Some of my songs i hate, but some i'm quite pleased with they're all very personal to me as i write about my own situations and difficult times i've been through, including break ups, friendships, and mental health. So i want to know if you think i should just go for this contest? if anyone wants me to i can put up some lyrics to see what they think

Definitely go for it. I would personally love a chance to enter sons in a contest like that, then again, maybe I wouldn't enter them all because as you said, they can be very personal and private.
If it's something you really like though, and you want to enter them, go for it, there's nothing to lose.
And I'd love to see some of your lyrics
You came back :) |

Go for it!
Lyrics are important...
don't just make them rhyme.

There are a bunch of songs I know that are great, well-thought songs that do not have rhyming lyrics. I'd say that the most important part of song-writing is creating a catchy introduction that makes the listener continue listening. Personally, I enjoy the meaningful lyrics.

Thanks for the replies everyone i agree, lyrics do really have to have meaning behond them and it doesnt matter if they rhume or not. Some songs rhyme but theres no true meaning behind them and that really bugs me. When i write i write in the moment, i have to write about my experinces. I cant write about something im not passionate about and i cant write like a happy song when im bawling my eyes out. My lyrics show what was going through my mind at that exact moment as im writing. I tend to write in very difficult moments, and if im honest, looking back on some of my lyrics its scary what was going through my mind. Another thing when i write, i never force words out and i dont sit and think too much about what im writing, i just let the words come naturally, and i think, for me anyway, the lyrics are a lot more honest and open than if i sat and thought too long and hard about it. I write all the time and currently, after having a very difficult time where ive been deeply hurt by someone who i thought i could trust, im trying to find myself again. Since my first boyfriend i dont feel ive been the same person i was before and im concentrating on myself and to find myself again and the stuff im writing now is reflecting that, questioning who i am and why i feel ive changed during the past year. So my lyrics are very deep and personal to me and i think thats what songwriting needs thanks everyone for your replies though i appreciate it
