Not getting a joke until after a VERY long time

Around a year (or maybe two) ago, I posted a joke on Wocka about Catholics being addicted to cats. I thought it was a great joke, but then I later found out that I was reinventing a wheel that had been invented 100 times before. 
Anyway, there was a comment that was something like, 'Then why do they preach dogmas?' I thought it was a weird comment. I was thinking about that comment again today when it hit me. Dogmas ... as opposed to cat-mas. How could I not have got that?

Sometimes, in public, I laugh at jokes that I don't get because the alternative is awkwardly having someone explain the joke to me.

^ I'd say not to laugh at jokes you don't know. When you do get it, it might not be very funny.
There are likely some jokes I'd heard in shows I watched as a kid that I get now (some are funny, others less so). But that's been done to death since most involve "mature" humour that seems to thrive in modern society. Reference humour is better, I'd say. No matter how smart you are and no matter how many encyclopedias you've eaten, there will always be a reference you only get later. Those can be quite clever as well: see classic Simpsons.
In cat-mas/dog-mas, is the joke just that the other word, "dogmas," has the root "dog" in it and therefore the word "catmas" is not intended to be a real word? Or is there further word play going on by having the suffix "-mas" stand in for "mass" as "Christmas" for "Christ mass," and thus contrasting "dog mass" and "cat mass?" [I understand what the word dogma means, but if it can mean two things then it would also give a concrete contrast for catmas.]

They're cat-a-holics, so why do they preach dogmas? I believe you were looking for a more elaborate joke than there actually was, Rog.

Well, I got that. I was just trying to interpret it further. Blame literary analysis for my seeing what isn't there.
The common joke of this nature that I know is "my karma ran over your dogma." Though I suppose, based on the words' religious meanings, even that could be read at a different level. If one was trying too hard.

Well, I think that originally the poster saying "dog-mas as opposed to cat-mas" was misleading, because it's not that it's not catmas, but just that religions have religious dogma, and since they are Cat-holics, they should not be preaching Dog-mas. I think also the dog-mas, dog-mass, thing kinda wants to be a part of it but unfortunately it doesn't really fit. But, I can also see that the OP might have understood that but chose to express the joke's meaning in a different way.
The karma ran over dogma thing is one I've always wonderred about too... is there more to it than just two words that end with ma and are "car" and "dog"? Because, well, I guess karma could run over dogma because karma is the real thing and dogma could be just a lot of words.
Life... can be so many things... how can anyone ever think they are RIGHT? HAhahahahahahaha!!!!! |
