I thought the movie was great! I'm usually very critical of book-to-film adaptations, but I thought they did a good job.
It made sense to change the symbolization of the pin. The movie was already two hours and twenty-two minutes long. Madge isn't that essential to understanding the plot, so they just made it easier to get the pin in there without having to spend time on Madge. The pin's symbolization only changed slightly anyway: it still represented Katniss fighting for her repressed district and her little sister. And it retains the mockingjay thing, as Katniss both wittingly and unwittingly mocks the Capitol's agenda. So I agree with that decision.
I think the camerawork during the fighting scenes was mostly about keeping it vague and fuzzy enough to retain a lower rating. They were clearly skating the line with the ratings at some parts. Filming it shakily made it vague enough not to show the violence so directly and also mimics the confusion of the characters experiencing it. It was super annoying though, I agree. It went on too long at the end on top of the cornucopia.
I think the actors all did a good job, too. I wasn't very convinced about Peeta's part before seeing the movie. But I think that guy did a good job capturing Peeta's sort of charm, humor, and sensitivity, the predominating features of his personality. The movie Katniss isn't totally like the version in my head, but I like the movie's version of her also. Everyone else was good, too.
Roger, if you're more interested in the political side of the plot, you will be interested in the next two books/films, which revolve heavily around the political implications hinted at the end The Hunger Games.

I watched the movie today. I got to say, I'm finally glad to be able to have faces for the characters whenever I read the books *nods*
