Probably HP. I mean, the characters in LOTR kinda sucked, in my opinion.

With kids you spend the first 2 years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next 15 years telling them to sit down and be quiet.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the first 5 harry potters were good and the last three really sucked!!!

So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real".

I'd say Harry Potter, while I loved both movie series I had major issues getting into the LOTR books (to the point I haven't got passed the first book) and I find Harry Potter's characters have more distinct personalities, likes and dislikes. There's so much detail in the Hogwarts, the environments there and the characters that even before the movies I could picture them all perfectly in my head. It also made me more attached to the books and the characters. I cried when Dumbledore died. I didn't cry when I thought Gandalf died.

Lookey here, I've got a window sheet!

LotR FTW!!! As for all you Harry Potter fans, here's something which will stifle fear in all of you:

"YOU. SHALL. NOT. PASS!!!"

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." -Romans 12:2

I don't think it is a fair comparison, given that the genres are so different. I love both.

I discovered "The Hobbit" when I was 13, and it took me a few tries to get through it. Once I finished that, it was on to LOTR. I would read it over and over, often reading it aloud with my younger sister - making voices for the characters.

I didn't start reading the Harry Potter series until I was an adult. I remember enjoying the first book, thinking it was the type of story I would have loved as a child. Once I read the third book, my favorite, I began to appreciate the series as a whole.

Overall, I would say the writing of Tolkien is superior to Rowling, but mostly because he was a college professor who had studied fables and ancient tales for years, and had crafted an enormous backstory that the narrative could draw upon, including entire languages for the peoples of Middle Earth. Rowling created a great story, but because she is writing for a younger audience, you can't really compare the two works in any fair debate.

But if we're talking about movies, LOTR is better.

SPOILER ALERT

SPOILER ALERT

SPOILER ALERT

I whole-heartedly believe that Lord of the Rings is better.

First of all, the storyline is just epic. There is a ring that has unbelievable power that will corrupt anyone who has it, and they must bring it to a specific mountain from whence it was forged to be destroyed. Doing that while entire armies of orcs and other beasts are trying to find the ring and return it to their master who created the ring.

Secondly, Tolkien created an entire Elvish language to utilize in his writings, and at any one point it is hard to tell what will happen at the end of the journey, even once Frodo is in the mountain about to destroy the ring. He truly points out the struggles each person has, and shows that even the hero of the day can falter.

Thirdly, if you read a harry potter book they all pretty much had the same plot line, it was predictable when something "interesting" would happen.

Lastly, Tolkien incited his readers by using religious imagery to invoke emotional responses while a person read. By the time Harry Potter came out it was just another book that could be mass marketed, and to be honest the ending of book 7 was much too "happy ending", especially after nearly everyone dies in the 7th book.

lol yes, it seems to contradict itself. What I meant was, everyone dies and then at the end there is this mushy scene of everyone being married with kids, and the kids all have names of the dead people. I mean... its just too happy for what just transpired. At least Frodo lost a finger or two.

Lord of the Rings beats Harry Potter so badly that it is not funny. While it is true that both have magical creatuers the Lord of the Rings have three Books/ Movies with disticnt fight sequences. Where as every fight scene in the Harry Potter books is the SAME!!! Point wand, say spell, repeat until you win.

Take my Dark Tower quiz. Please!
