Special effects clearly contribute to films, but to say that there wouldn't be a film without them is ludicrous. And to be annoyed that a director failed to mention them in something as trivial as an Oscars speech seems, to me, too low to sink for people who do actually make great designs.

I think it would be funny to watch a classic special-effects-ey movie with everything taken out. Like the above pictures, but a whole movie.

As far as the Oscars speech, they don't give the winner nearly enough time to thank everyone involved - I say the special effects team should drop it and be happy with their paycheck.
