Special effects clearly contribute to films, but to say that there wouldn't be a film without them is ludicrous. And to be annoyed that a director failed to mention them in something as trivial as an Oscars speech seems, to me, too low to sink for people who do actually make great designs.

Not all films require special effects, but this particular film wouldn't be where it is without special effects ...

I think it would be funny to watch a classic special-effects-ey movie with everything taken out. Like the above pictures, but a whole movie.

As far as the Oscars speech, they don't give the winner nearly enough time to thank everyone involved - I say the special effects team should drop it and be happy with their paycheck.

Happy ever after in the marketplace, Desmond lets the children lend a hand. Molly stays at home and does her pretty face, and in the evening she's the singer with the band!

It seems to me that many movies were and still are made without computer effects.

I think it is important to differentiate between computer effects and visual effects.

There were many visual effects in The Exorcist, such as when the daughter crawled down the stairs or when her head spun or when she floated on the bed.

I think it is somewhat a shame that they aren't given proper credit but at the same time, if all the artists who were working on the film had quit it would not be hard to replace them all and have the same quality art. On the other hand, Robert Downey Jr. is much harder to replace.
