The Lieutenant- Kate Grenville
Great 2nd book for Kate - 1st was "The Secret River" which gave us the story of a poor english man in the 1800's who was sent out to Australia as one of the first settlers. In "The Lieutenant", Kate goes back even further to the late 1700's to the arrival of the very firts fleet. The story maps the life of "Lieutenant Daniel Rooke" who grows up different (smarter) than the rest of his co-hort. He desperately wants to be an astronomer, but as all spaces are filled, takes a chance on the first fleet to be the first astronomer of Australia.
The story accounts dealings with "the savages" (aboriginies), and his experience in meeting them and trying to learn thier cultures and languages.
Both the "Secret River" and "The Lieutenant" are amazing books. They are not at all boring (even though when I read the flyleaf I though "ooooohhhhhhhhh god....."), they are really entertaining and make you think about the way we act, think and live.
The next book i'd like to read is "The art of looking sideways", which I've been told is fabulous!

I'm not currently reading so much as writing (barely, but I'm trying.. been tired and uninspired and unmotivated lately..)
But I did pre-order "Burn" by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy. It doesn't come out until January though.
I also ordered the Inhuman Rampage tab book. Does that count?
