People Died Today
Mrs. Reagan was buried today next to her husband "Ronnie". I saw part of the service... it was nice tribute to her. The garden is very nice, I have been there in person... it's about 40 miles from where I live. I had never been to a Presidential library before. I was surprised at how big it was. I guess I did not expect to walk through a retired Air Force One...

Snappy... just to be clear, I wasn't at the actual service. I visited the Reagan library about a year ago and saw where our past President was buried. I saw the service on TV... I am not anyone in the world of politics and would never have been invited to this service; though unlike our president Obama, I would have attended it to show respect.

Patty Duke has died at the age of 69. She earned her Academy Award as Helen Keller! Rest in peace... you can always celebrate with your identical cousin!

Merle Haggard... Born and died on the same day, today he turned 79, he won't be a day older though.

Oh how I will miss the original sound of Merle. He and Willie have put out some great music together, of course with The Highwaymen. My son took me to see Willie several years ago for my birthday and even though I was in a handicapped spot I still thoroughly enjoyed his show. He put his show on in a relatively small town - we call it Hollywood - in mid-Nebraska, and his next show was in Denver - but he cancelled about a month of his shows after appearing here. For a while I feared I may have seen Willie's last live show. but the man keeps right on rolling - what ever he smokes - and his songs. Merle and Johnny managed to help those in prison feel like someone really cared about them. The good ones are all going to the Holy Land - what glorious sounds there will be!

A true tribute Grayma... Willie has already jumped out there and gave his own tribute.
I do want to see him in concert... probably because he is one of the only singers I can imitate. I mean no self promotion in this. My #2 brother stopped short in his track at a family function when I started to sing without any music, "You were always on my mind"... as Willie sang it. He looked at me and said something similar to Cripes, you sound just like him (he used a holy name of two words in that place). That to me was more of a compliment than anyone would understand. I am #4, #2 always had the singing talents when we grew up. All four of us played the guitars at family functions, but only #1 & #2 sang... #3 always knew he was tone deaf and could not hold a note, I actually only did background music... I was young. By the time my voice reached it's range... family functions with the guitars had stopped.
Point is, country music is not my #1 music choice, but back in high school, I sure followed it and do love it... though I am more of a rock and roll person.

William Schallert died on Sunday, age 93
I am sure many here will not know him, but he was on the TV a lot while I was growing up. He played an English teacher in the many loves of Dobie Gillis... after that the father and uncle of those identical twins in The Patty Duke Show. Patty Duke passed away in late March... tributes to both for what was an enjoyable show back then!
What a warm and caring person he played in these shows.... rest in peace my friend... you made me laugh and that is always a good thing.

When I was college, I used to watch the Pink Panther. I followed it until the reboots in 2006 and 2009. One of my favorite characters was Cato, the material arts expert who served Clouseau. The actor for him, Burt Kwouk, passed away today.
Also, the (formerly) oldest living Olympic champion died on May 21st.

I won't say I knew this person very well, but I do remember seeing some of the routines. He was considered a sidekick of Milton Berle, who died in the early 2000's. His name was Irving Benson, he played Sidney Spritzer who would sit in the balcony above Milton as he did his routine and would heckle him.
One of their routines (I read it today on Wikipedia to help me remember him...) he followed Milton after he noted that "comedy is in my blood," Spritzer said, "You better get a transfusion."
He was considered one of the last vaudeville and burlesque comedians still alive... well until yesterday when he died at age 102.

May he rest in peace. But how ironic that I should just happen to be working on my June 1st birthday wishes. Randy, you were watching episodes of Matlock to jog your memory regarding Milton Berle. I was gathering people whose birthday was on June 1. Guess who, and I forgot to list this well known TV show as part of his reasons to remember him. Andy Griffith was born on June 1, 1926, and passed on July 3, 2012 at the age of 86. I have to admit I didn't see a lot of Matlock, but I don't think I ever missed an episode of Mayberry.
"To live in the hearts of those left behind is not to die." This is on Aunt Bee's gravestone. Truly words to honor all three of the lost cast of Mayberry RFD - Andy Taylor, Barney Fife and Aunt Bee. And who would have believed that little Opie would become SO famous.

Grayma, growing up watching The Andy Griffith show first showings (you do recall Mayberry RFD was the spin off of the Andy Griffith Show ... with Ken Berry)... it has always been one of my favs. Recently I was using IMDB to look at the show; it allows you to see "where they are today"... I figured many had passed away, though I knew Ron Howard "Opie" was still alive. Reviewing it again tonight, it shows that most of all the older cast are gone; except Betty Lou "Thelma Lou" is still alive and kicking at 90, Jim Nabors "Gomer" at 85 (will be 86 on June 12th), & of course the beautiful Elinor Donahue "Ellie" at a young age of 79. There are a few others, but they were not really main characters.
I didn't watch Matlock when it was first on in 1986... I like "ME" TV, lots of the older shows. Love Griffith, MASH, Diagnostic Murder... and Matlock, and several others... seems I am almost always watching it if there is not a good movie on TCM. It seems to me the owner of ME loves Perry Mason... its on twice a day... and never less for the past few years. Some shows have come and gone... Mason stays. I don't care for it... he never loses (well, he did like 2 or 3 times) and he is so dry in his talk, and I guess why I have no desire to rewatch these reruns. Matlock is enjoyable to watch... but again, he really never lost a case...except in a flash back mode. One case he actually won, but then it was found that his client was guilty... can't always be right on! I think the difference is that Andy was funny to watch too in this role... oh well.

Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr died today at the age of 74. Better known to most as Muhammad Ali (The Greatest). Ali learned to box after his bicycle was stolen when he was 12 years old. When young Clay vowed to "whoop the behind" of the thief, a local police officer encouraged him to learn to box to channel his energy.
I was in the US Navy in 1975 where we were on a Wespac cruise... and in late September to early October 1975, our ship was in port in Manila, Philippines. At the time, I did not follow boxing at all, but I recognized the names Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, and they had a boxing match there on Oct 1st, better known as the Thrilla of Manila.
I did not go to the fight, but did buy an orange t-shirt with both their names and silhouettes on it to show I was there. I recognized the significance of the fight even though I never followed the sport. I think somewhere in one of my clothes drawer is what is left of that shirt... it is not in pristine condition... but it, to me, it's history.
You really were the greatest... and you proved it better after you retired from boxing!

I am old enough that I remember when Cassis Clay won the heavyweight fight for the US in the Olympics. He was a very handsome, loud mouth even then. But the man proved he could back up everything that came out of his mouth. So he didn't want to go to war, he held his ground and paid the cost, but then came back and regained his title. Not often would I root for a man who refused service to his country, but I do have to say I did admire this man. Knowing he was ill, watching him light the Olympic Torch brought tears to my eyes as I felt it was their way of honoring a great man and his way of honoring all the athletes, winners and losers who delved to win that Olympic Gold. May Muhammad Ali rest in peace and may his family receive solace in knowing the world also mourns The Greatest!
