What does everyone think of Obama's performace in his first year? Has he fulfilled any of his promises set out in his election campaign? If not, do you think he will at some point achieve them before the end of his presidency? Is there anything he has disappointed you with?

Relevant news articles (all from 20th Jan 10)
CNN - Obama's first year in review
BBC - Obama's first year: summing up
The Independent (UK) - Obama's year in power

Opinions please

Mid-way through Obama's presidency, how do people think he has performed? Looking ahead to the future, can you see him winning a second term?

I honestly can't say that I know much about Obama and what he has done for the country... all I know is that things seem to continue to get worse while he says we are working toward a better future.

I have heard good speeches and promising words, heartfelt comments and rallies for us to pull together but as a president I think he is failing tremendously.

I think the president should be able to help resolve the issue we have in the House and Senate where it seems republicans and democrats won't work together. The President has done nothing but pull apart the country from the seams and suggests more taxing and more spending.

Spending.

SPENDING.

SPENDING!!!!

This man seems to think that spending money no one has is the answer to our problems and a BALANCING OF THE CHECKBOOK is needed. Until we have a president who can do this and start our country on a path of financial security, then they have not done a good job.

Furthermore, I am interested to see what he can do to improve education standards.

I've been disappointed in some things. Obama said, during the debates with McCain, that the first thing he would do is get us out of Iraq. He got big applause when he said that. That was not what he did. I don't mean he didn't get us out... I mean that wasn't his first priority when he was elected. He went from listening to his supporters to listening to the various people at the top who are really the ones running the show. He listened to them more than he listened to his supporters.

But, aside from that, it's not the President who's at fault. It's our entire country. In general, we do not participate in our government. We listen to what the news tells us they are doing, and then we gripe about it. We are supposed to BE the gov't- "of, by, and for the people". But, through being too busy, too lazy, too tired, too poor, and on the other hand, too greedy, too arrogant, too fearful, both the people and the gov't have grown apart.

There are all kinds of things people can do, but they're not doing them. Most people don't even vote in anything but the Presidential election. Most people don't know who their representatives are, and don't have the faintest idea how to contact them. It's not all OUR fault, not at all. It's everyone's. But, we can't expect one man, elected for four years, to make these huge changes in our country all by himself! (and believe me, I am totally included in ALL of what I'm saying. Our gov't and country are a MESS! We're not anything like what we started out as)

I suspect Obama might win a second term, but a lot has to do with who his opponents are.

I don't think he has done that good of a job, but I also thought when he first ran for the office that he was not ready for it. Sorry, but the man was still new at being a Senator... no experience. It shows.

I also think that we have way too much party favoritism going on. I hate that part of our government. Voting along party lines just does not make sense to me if the government really is for the PEOPLE... not the politicians... but we all know that just isn't the way it is now. Shame on all politicians who do this - too bad the people are not willing to vote out their Senators and Representatives who follow their party line and not what do what the people are asking for.

Just saying....

Most Presidents take nice vacations on our tax dollars for "Business" trips... what surprises me is that the spouse and kids need to go along for the same "business" trip. Yep, glad he can enjoy them

Well it was revealed that our little Foreign Minister has spent more than AUS$1 million on 14 trips in the 12 months to August 2011. In Stockholm, he stayed in a AUS$1700.00 a night room!

Nice job if you can get it, eh!

Imagine what his passport must look like!!!!

You made such good points, RGW, and snappy, are you going to meet him at the airport? I think you should! And, bake him a cake! If you don't, he won't know the real Aussie hospitality, or see your incredible CAKES!

The thing about the hotels, trips, etc.? That is one of those things that makes me break out in a sweat and my blood-pressure go up!

When the Obamas first moved to Wash. DC, they couldn't move in to the usual place where the newly-elected Pres./family stays until the current Pres. moves out of the White House. THAT house, a mansion on the White House grounds (I think), was being occupied by... uh, a friend of a diplomat or something... SOOOO... the Obamas had to stay in the most expensive hotel in Wash., DC, and of course since it's the new Pres., they have to basically rent the whole thing for security, etc.

All I'm saying is, our elected reps and leaders have come to live like aristocrats. I don't mind the President and his family getting a nice place to stay... but, does it always have to be the most expensive? And what about these people living in the house the Obamas were supposed to stay in? Who were they? The elected and unelected officials of the USA are parading around the world, staying in the plushest hotels, with the biggest houses, the best cars, the hand-made shoes, etc. etc. etc. all at our expense. How is this government by the people, for the people, OF the people?

Yeah Shawneeo...I was listening to some of our politicians speaking about our economy.
And I thought...what makes them an expert on say being a full bottle on Finance?
Who is this guy? Why is he telling us stuff about the economy and we just believe him?
And the more he repeats himself, the more people believe him! We don't KNOW that what he is saying is true...
we, like lemmings, believe him!!!

We are such saps. But we cannot do anything to change it.

You are so right about the "lemmings". We can check our politician's voting records and make an informed decision, but ... that is so much work. It's so much easier to pick a party and blindly follow, believing all of the crap that they sling. I wish people would put a little more effort into it before casting their vote.

It's not what you know, it's what people think you know.
