Though I'm no expert in the field, nor too knowledgeable on the bill itself, I have heard of it and am rather disappointed in it. I'm referring to the bill the House of Representatives is currently looking over concerning Internet Piracy. I apologise if this topic has already been discussed, but I'm curious as to some of your thoughts on the issue.
As I'm not terribly certain of it and will likely be saying the few biased points I know, I will use the following links to show a less biased summary of what it is.

[Note: This topic does concern piracy but should be fine as it does not promote it just as drugs may be discussed as long as they do not encourage or explain in detail.]
From what I've heard this new bill could affect sites tremendously. It seeks to stop online piracy and remove copyrighted material but sounds like it would have power to control activity even if no copyrighted material is present. I have always hated how Youtube takes down music just so bloated companies can post their own ad-infested version. It claims to protect the emerging creators but I think we all know that it's not a newly graduated art student who's being stolen from. Companies want to protect their own and force others to buy from them, and I think that's disgusting.
Now, I understand if a site is selling the property. Yes, that is wrong. But to remove a piece from someone who's just trying to spread the art seems wrong to me. Illegal activities aside, if this passes this will likely have Youtube and other video hosting sites more wary from what the government can do to them. This will get them to crack down on everything possibly copyrighted. I've heard before that an amateur video was taken down just because it had a copyrighted song playing in the background, not even as a part of the soundtrack either, just on TV in the background. I think it's madness from greedy and jealous corporations and should be refused or at the very least deeply considered.
Yes, likely biased as all else, but this bill annoys me and this is my opinion on the matter.

This bill is very, very scary 
As usual, the only ones to benefit are corporations, and the average America has to suffer. This is essentially just a form of censorship and a way to impede innovation/creativity, NOT a means to curb piracy.
Pretty much any site that the government has a problem with can be taken down under the guise of this bill.

The voting date is January 24. I checked USA.gov, and it appears that many major companies (the list is so long) are for it and begging for it to be passed. I understand where they're coming from, but come on. This is our freedom. Why is it all of a sudden an issue now when online piracy has been around seen the World Wide Web started in 1995.
I think the government is desperate and attacking every avenue available, even if it whacks the public.

fortunately, the wikipedia and google and other efforts made a difference.. how much, and for how long? who knows.
bills written by those ignorant of the potentials, uncaring of it's possible abuse, caring only for their clients and unwilling to solicite knowledgable help in determining the careful wording of such efforts without creating nightmares for the innocent are apparently the lifeblood of a lazy congress, bound to act but indifferent to the potential damage they do.
wikipedia deserves praise for it's actions.
